The project was initiated by the relocation of the UniSA’s City West Campus child care centre. Located in the west end of the Adelaide CBD which is experiencing considerable growth and renewal. The site is configured as a contemporary take on a cloister arrangement with perimeter buildings orienting towards a central playspace. In collaboration with Architects, Grieve Gillett Andersen and the Lady Gowrie Centre, the design was guided by best practice early childhood education which has been recently developed through numerous centres interstate.
The site for the new nursery forms part of the landscape buffer at the edge of the Kings Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh (UoE). The site had many existing qualities featuring over 30 mature trees, meadow grasses and a sea of daffodils in the spring. The brief set was to design and build a new nursery garden as part of the consolidation of the UoE’s existing two nurseries into a single purpose built facility. The new nursery was to be a unique environment that would reflect the quality and standards of the UoE. The urban quarters south of Frankfurter Allee are low-density areas with a high green rate („green islands“). Small squares or green spaces accentuate the district and become sites with high amenity values. The design concept aimed to strengthen these characteristics and to enhance a distinctive identity.
HASSELL recently teamed up with not for profit organisation Archikidz and Sydney Living Museums, on a playful project to make kids seen and heard in the city. Together, the team created PLAY[ground] – a place that would inspire tomorrow’s thinkers and city makers to play, experiment and toy with ideas about the future shape of our cities.
The Magical Bridge Playground in Palo Alto, California is one of the nation’s most innovative inclusive playgrounds — allowing every child and every parent the opportunity to play. Children can move through the trees on an elevated walk and swing, sway, spin and slide, all on surfaces and equipment without barriers. The Magical Bridge Playground is about bridging the physical and social barriers which prevent children of all ages and abilities from uniting together in play. Here children are powerful, not passive, able to take risks, climb higher, think harder, and foster friendships through play. By meeting the diverse developmental needs of children through universal design, the bridges we are building are physical, intellectual, communicative, sensory, and social; to embrace a truly inclusive place where all children can experience equality of opportunity, full participation, and independence in play.
