The planning concept for the park is an expression of the traces of its past and the important moments of its history. The esplanade also highlights the spirit of place found in the contemporary urban grid of the neighborhood. The park becomes a witness to the site’s history, commemorating it through three key landscape elements: the river and its piers, the vestiges of former railways lines, and the historic city in development.

The Canadian Firefighters Memorial officially opened on September 9, in Ottawa, Canada. Located at the site of the capital’s devastating fire of 1900, this urban-planning memorial ensemble was collaboratively designed by PLANT Architect Inc. and Canadian visual artist and novelist Douglas Coupland. The team won the national competition hosted by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) and the National Capital Commission (NCC) in 2010. The Artists’ Backyard: Phase 1 | Raleigh USA | NC State Department of Landscape Architecture Design+Build Studio |
The NC State Department of Landscape Architecture Design+Build Studio recently transformed an otherwise anonymous stretch of mulch between two campus residence halls into a high-­‐performance landscape, rich with social and environmental affordances. This landscape, called the Artists’ Backyard (derived from the adjacent Arts Village living/learning community), uses a holistic approach to educate students, staff, and visitors about the value of landscape architecture; the ability of green infrastructure to conserve resources; and how small spaces can make big moves toward creating community value and protecting the environment.

Jinzhou World Landscape Art Exposition | Jinzhou China | estudioOCA
We envision this project as an opportunity to reach a large number of people, where we are able to showcase the use of native plants in a region and country that has been going through extensive ecological changes in a short period of time. We hope to bring a fresh perspective to these plants and their original habitats, using the pavilion space to showcase, through graphic materials, the different ecosystems where the plants originate. The plant palette will consist of native grasses, wetland plants such as cattails, and native trees.
