Perkins+Will’s new Atlanta office presented the opportunity to transform an existing building in the heart of Midtown by both reusing the building’s worthy assets and correcting its signature faults. Recently certified LEED Platinum, with the highest score ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere, the success of the project suggests that reuse and renovation is central to the concept of sustainability. While earning accolades for excellence in building design, one of the project’s most profound features is its renewed connection to the street. Innovation Square is an urban redevelopment project that will transform twelve underutilized blocks in Midtown Gainesville into a mixed-use urban research neighborhood that advances the national and global profile of the city’s largest employer—the University of Florida with its medical center, Shands Hospital at UF —and the growing local biotech industry. The Visioning process for the District has set in place lasting partnerships between public and private stakeholders to ensure successful implementation.
The Atlanta BeltLine is an infrastructure framework around which the urban core of Atlanta will grow by as many as 100,000 people. This loop of old railroads is being transformed into a 22-mile transit greenway that combines light-rail transit, parks and multi-use trails to generate economic growth and protect quality-of-life in 45 historic neighborhoods surrounding the central city. The BeltLine Corridor Design will establish typologies for all landscape architecture elements, wayfinding and signage, infrastructure and development interface. fibroCITY was conceived and designed by the Houston office of Perkins+Will, who envision a pedestrian-oriented, community-driven environment that physically bridges over the city’s existing highway system as a means of reconnecting urban communities. This design entry for the Living City Design Competition responds to the history of highway development in Houston. The selected site, located at highway 288 south of downtown, was divided socially and economically by the highway’s development in the 1960s and 70s — conditions which still exist today.
