Paralleling the opening of London’s luxury NEO Bankside development next to the Tate Modern is the unveiling of a new city-centre green landscape. At NEO Bankside, Gillespies has created a series of richly-detailed garden spaces around the footprint of the apartment pavilions, designed by architects RSHP. The final landscape features soft planting inspired by native woodlands, balancing beautifully with the contemporary lines of the buildings. Today, the Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad (NTR) announced the city of Almere, the winner of the 2022 Floriade, the world horticultural expo which takes place once every ten years in the Netherlands and is currently ending in Venlo. The MVRDV plan for Almere is not a temporary expo site but a lasting green Cité Idéale as an extension to the existing city centre. The waterfront site opposite the city centre will be developed as a vibrant new urban neighbourhood and also a giant plant library which will remain beyond the expo. Almere with MVRDV won the competition against Boskoop with OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Groningen with West 8 and Amsterdam Bijlmer with MTD Landscape Architect.
BDP has won the masterplan competition for the New Hospital and New Psychiatry Bispebjerg in the northern part of Copenhagen, Denmark. The winning project divides the site into four quarters with a green park in the centre and allows space for the beautiful, heritage-listed pavilions and green gardens.
Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei have created the 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. It is the twelfth commission in the Gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind. The design team responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium, which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games has come together again in London in 2012 for the Serpentine’s acclaimed annual commission, presented as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. The Pavilion is Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s first collaborative built structure in the UK.
