The vision for the city of Rotterdam is that it should be again the city engaging with the river Maas. The docks play an important role as a transitional area and recreational support. Recreation strengthens the relationship between city and water. In particular, the northern quays have been given a green and softer atmosphere, which reinforces the long line of the series of quays.

Landscape architect, Gavin Duke, worked closely with art collector homeowners to design innovative outdoor living spaces to feature their interests and passions.

Zollhallen Plaza is new counterpart for the historic customs hall which was restored in 2009. The plaza is a fine example of water sensitive urban design, as it is disconnected from the sewer system. Beautiful planters provide infiltration points, and subsurface gravel trenches with innovative in-built filter medium reduce the hydraulic overload on the sewer system.
