Just arrived in the WLA mailbox is the Autumn edition of Landscape – The Journal of the Landscape Institute. This edition covers the Landscape Institute Awards 2012 and also a few interesting articles about 2016 Olympics Rio masterplan, Remaking Cities and the Highline for London Competition. The section I enjoyed reading was Debate – Should landscape architects be activists?. Landscape is published quarterly by the Landscape Institute.

August saw the plans for the 2012 London Olympics Legacy plans unveiled including North Park by erect architecture, South Park by James Corner Field Operations. A design competition was held in late 2011 to create designs for the South Plaza to provide the stage for an exciting range of cultural, sporting and community events and activities, all taking place beneath the imposing form of the extraordinary ArcelorMittal Orbit after the 2012 Games. New York-based James Corner Field Operations were chosen as the south plaza winners for their design concept, which features a tree-lined promenade connecting flexible spaces for events, cultural programmes, food stalls and other attractions. The area will have a London’s South Bank feel and will welcome the majority of visitors to the Park. The practice is renowned for its contemporary design across a variety of projects including the award winning and widely acclaimed High Line in New York City, which is recognised as one of the best new public spaces in recent years. A design competition was held in late 2011 to create designs for the North Park Hub and Playground, the social focus of the northern part of the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and a key resource for local residents after the 2012 Games. London-based firm erect architecture were chosen for their winning design concept to create a community hub building integrated into the parkland and river valley of the north park area. West 8’s project Jubilee Gardens is finally going ahead and will screen live footage of the 2012 Olympics. The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has recently announced £11.5m funding to six London boroughs for public space projects that will transform the look and feel of the Capital in time for the 2012 Games. Jubilee Gardens is situated on the iconic Southbank and forms part of Lambeth, one of the funded boroughs. Lambeth will get £1.5m to create a live site for the 2012 Games and a world-class park.
