VIDEO | Coastal Work starts on Katwijk in the Netherlands | OKRA

OKRA recently published a short video showing the construction work on the coast defence at Katwijk in the Netherlands. Alongside building the required coastal defence, the coast zone investments ensure that Katwijk remains a tourist destination and supporting the local economy of seaside towns. With the need to strengthen the Katwijk coast, care is taken to preserve the value of the existing town and, ultimately, how this can also be made stronger.

Stadswater-Rotterdam-OKRA-Canal-Edge

For a long time the historic canals in the urban landscape of Rotterdam were forgotten. Today water plays the prominent role, that once it had within the city and can be discovered by visitors once again. The transformation of Stadwater is in fact a reversion of the relationship between the city and its urban canals. Since medieval times the urban water was not orientated towards the water, resulting in back-sides of the buildings along the water and anonymous public realm along the water, such as parking spaces and delivery roads. Waterplein | Rotterdam Netherlands | DE URBANISTEN
The space is gently defined and subdivided by a green structure of high grasses, colorful flowers and the existing large trees. Our water square creates a new context for the great modern building of Maaskant and the fantastic giant artwork of Karel Appel.

Bellamy Park | Vlissingen Netherlands | OKRA
The Bellamy Park, the de Ruyterplein and the Beursplein in Vlissingen form an ensemble of spaces in the context of a changing maritime town. The image of the big ships in town has disappeared. The maritime character presents itself much more refined. The town centre has enlarged itself psychologically, with the developments around the Arsenaal and the fishing harbour, and recently with redeveloped squares and streets.

Civic Space Park | Phoenix USA | AECOM
AECOM’s Phoenix-based Design + Planning studio guided the project from visioning sessions and masterplanning of the park, through complete construction observation. Work included extensive public meetings with the community to create a park that accommodates a variety of users and events, alongside a major public art commission, and various interactive water features and lighting elements.

The location of Bellamy Park in Vlissingen is unique, certainly in the Netherlands and because of its relation to the Western Scheldt and the sea. The Bellamy Park, the de Ruyterplein and the Beursplein in Vlissingen form an ensemble of spaces in the context of a changing maritime town. The image of the big ships in town has disappeared.
