The Overdiepse Polder, located on the south bank of the Bergsche Maas, is one of over 30 ‘Room for the River’ projects. In the polder preventative measures are being taken to enlarge the drainage capacity of the river during high water. So called ‘river widening’. This project is special because inhabitants and entrepreneurs in the polder came up with the solution early on: The Mound Plan.

The community board organised a participation process, mapping the wishes of the local residents. Renovating the soccer field and guarding off the biking path were important starting points, just like improving the spatial structure of the park. By arranging all new functions in one binding element, the surrounding space is reorganised, too.

Bellamy Park | Vlissingen Netherlands | OKRA

DSC_8361

The location of Bellamy Park in Vlissingen is unique, certainly in the Netherlands and because of its relation to the Western Scheldt and the sea. The Bellamy Park, the de Ruyterplein and the Beursplein in Vlissingen form an ensemble of spaces in the context of a changing maritime town. The image of the big ships in town has disappeared. The maritime character presents itself much more refined. The town centre has enlarged itself psychologically, with the developments around the Arsenaal and the fishing harbour, and recently with redeveloped squares and streets.
