We have selected three projects from each month that we published in 2012. First off is January with studio a+i winning design for the AIDS Memorial, Michael Maltzan with Tom Leader Studio winning submission for St. Petersburg Pier and Warrior Square Gardens by Gillespies.

Image ©Robert Such This week the World Architecture Festival has been under way and yesterday the festival awards were announced with Kallang River Bishan Park, Singapore winning the landscape prize and Gardens by the Bay, Singapore winning World Building of the Year.  Kallang River Bishan Park winner of World Architecture Festival landscape prize Kallang River Bishan Park by Atelier Dreiseitl won the landscape prize as the judges deemed “This remarkable project fundamentally transforming the urban landscape of Singapore by rethinking the fundamentals of 1960s thinking, transforming a drainage canal into an eco- and people-friendly urban space.” Gardens by the Bay winning World Building of the Year with the award officially going to Wilkinson Eyre Architects for the design of the Cooled Conservatories. However, Paul Finch, Festival Director stressed at the awards ceremony that this was a magnificent team effort and that the whole team should be recognised – in addition to the architect, the landscape architect Grant Associates and engineers Atelier One and Atelier Ten. Congratulations to Atelier Dreiseitl and all of the Gardens By the Bay team. How would you connect the Hudson River Park and the Highline? Karan Maniar has created a design using the art and architecture of landscape to join the two distinct landscapes. Slowly but surely western influences are gathering ground in third world countries. It is important when trying to maintain the cultures of these countries that these influences from outside are integrated into existing structures with caution. Western modern-day architects have been active in this field from all over the world for years , Has their way of thinking changed over time or do they still rely on neocolonial views, modifying them for a continent like Africa? The Istanbul Design Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts for the first time, explores a wide range of fields, from urban design (environmental, urban and regional planning) to architecture, photography, industrial, graphic, fashion, textile and interaction design, and all related creative fields.
