NBBJ’s landscape architects were involved from the project’s inception addressing site planning, landscape design and integration with architecture and interior design. In the midst of the design process, Tom and Iris Vail, life-long residents of Cleveland and long-standing friends of the Clinic expressed interest in providing funding for the development of a very special garden at the Cleveland Clinic’s new Heart Center. The Vails are recognized leaders in Cleveland’s civic affairs and share a keen interest in architecture and garden design and have been instrumental in the development of other landmark garden spaces on the Clinic’s campus over the last 25 years.

As a coastal city shaped by climate change, the “One Shantou: Now, Tomorrow and the Future” vision will guide the city of Shantou (located east of Hong Kong and southwest of Shanghai) through an unpredictable future. The scheme respects the extensive planning and land reclamation that had already been completed by local and regional authorities. In so doing, it avoids the common pitfall of design competitions that overlook local insight and previous investments. It also challenges the notion that competitive advantage requires a city to develop its prime real estate along coastal waterfronts.

The suburban corporate headquarters campus is a common development model found across the US and abroad; and for a number of good reasons. The large volume of building and parking required for the hundreds of executives and staff coupled with the economic and logistic benefits associated with greenfield sites located at the perimeter of a city, make it an easy decision to establish headquarters out of the city core. When faced with the challenge expansion, the Grange Insurance Company considered this option but based on their commitment to the neighborhood, decided to keep their US headquarters in the city and invest their energies in the environment they have resided in for decades.

NBBJ, a global architecture and design firm, and Chan Krieger Sieniewicz, internationally-known for urban design and architecture excellence, announced today a merger of the two firms that will create an integrated team of over 700 architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners and interior designers.
The Chan Krieger Sieniewicz team, including its five principals, will continue in their current roles. As part of the transition to the NBBJ name, the Cambridge office will operate as Chan Krieger NBBJ.
The merger gives NBBJ, which already operates a project office in Boston, a larger presence in New England. The Seattle-based firm has offices in several U.S. cities, including Columbus, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle. Overseas offices include London, Beijing, Shanghai and Dubai.
