Fort Mason Center in San Francisco has revealed the three finalists designs from Bruner/Cott, West 8 and AMP Arquitectos for the Fort Mason Design Competition. The finalists were selected from twenty invited firms, in selecting the three finalists the jury looked for a partner to articulate a sustainable future for Fort Mason Center helping to develop a suite of ideas that will evolve as the campus moves forward.

City College of New York and Rutgers, were honored with Awards of Excellence for their entries Van Alen Institute: Projects in Public Architecture and the U.S. National ParkService are pleased to announce the winners of Parks for the People: A Student Competition to Reimagine America’s National Parks. Eight student and faculty teams were honored at the competition award ceremony, reception, and exhibition opening on September 19 in Washington, D.C. at the AIA Legacy Foundation’s Octagon Museum.

20 firms invited for Phase 1 of Fort Mason Center Revisited

Fort Mason Center has announced the 20 firms invited for Phase 1 of the  FORT MASON CENTER REVISITED design competition. In Phase 1 requires the firms to submit a Statement of Interest and the teams qualifications. Phase 2 will include three finalists selected to develop concepts for the Pier One(currently storage), the Public Realm and improving connections to the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate National Recreation. The 20 invited firms with several landscape architecture firms selected for Phase 1 including:  ! Melk, Conger Moss Guillard (CMG), Hood Design, James Corner Field Operations (JCFO), Sasaki Associates, SWA Group, West 8 New York.

Design Competition for President’s Park South

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) will manage a design competition to improve the appearance of the security infrastructure used to control unauthorized vehicular use at President’s Park South. This notice is to solicit interest in participating in that competition.

The proposed design competition will identify alternatives to re-design the security elements while preserving the historic landscape within President’s Park South, which includes First Division Monument, Sherman Park, a portion of E Street, the Ellipse roadways, State Place, Hamilton Place, South Executive Avenue, West South Executive Avenue, and East South Executive Avenue.
NCPC is a federal agency with a mission that includes planning for federal activities in the greater Washington, DC area. The competition will be administered by the NCPC Interagency Security Task Force in cooperation with the United States Secret Service (USSS) and the National Park Service (NPS).
The competition’s goal is to generate creative and thoughtful design concepts that integrate durable, more aesthetic USSS security elements and improve the visitor experience in the President’s Park South area, which is located immediately adjacent to the White House and its grounds.
A selection committee will evaluate each expression of interest with respect to (1) professional qualifications; (2) experience with projects of comparable scale and significance; (3) capacity to accomplish the work; and (4) the ability to obtain a federal security clearance. The committee will identify a list of twelve (12) to fourteen (14) well-qualified firms, from which four firms will then be selected to proceed into the competition’s design phase.

 

The four finalists will be invited to Washington, DC for a full briefing prior to the competition’s design portion and will receive a $20,000 honorarium upon submission of their design. In return for accepting the honorarium, finalists agree to waive any proprietary rights or interest in their design concept, and ideas contained in their submission and agree to the incorporation of their design, concepts and ideas, in whole or in part, into a potential solution implemented for President Park South whether or not they are selected to undertake the project.

 

The finalists will present their designs in a public forum and to the NCPC Interagency Security Task Force – the selection committee for the competition. Following these presentations, the NCPC Interagency Security Task Force will rank the finalists. The winning firm may subsequently have the opportunity to enter into a contract with the National Park Service to refine and potentially execute their design. A formal federal and local review and approval process, including a NEPA Environmental Assessment, will be completed following the competition.

Cream rises to the top for The City + The Arch + The River International Competition

The international design competition for the reinvigoration of the area surrounding the world renowned landmark the Gateway Arch has move on to the third and final design phase with Five Teams selected. When you look at the first list of nine teams announced back in February 2010 for the second stage it was the Who’s who of design but now that list is down to five teams; its the cream of the crop and the winner of the next stage will be a hard decision for all those involved and I guess we all have to wait until late September to find out the winner.

The leaders of the design teams entering the third and final stage of the competition are:

· MVVA Team led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates – New York City
· PWP Landscape Architecture, Foster + Partners, Civitas – Berkeley, Calif.
· SOM, Hargreaves, BIG – Chicago
· Weiss/Manfredi, Architecture/Site Design/Urbanism – New York

“The goal of the first two steps of the process was to identify design teams with the talent, capacity and commitment to create thoughtful design solutions addressing the complex issues of the site and its relationship to the city, the river and the Illinois side. With this selection, that goal has been accomplished,” said Competition Manager Donald J. Stastny, of StastnyBrun Architects. “The selected teams represent local, national and international perspective, and we look forward to working with them over the next few months as their visions evolve and they create their designs.”

“Having this level of architectural, engineering and landscape design power focused on such a visible urban park is exciting,” said Tom Bradley, superintendent of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “We are committed to incorporating our parks into the life of their surrounding communities. I look forward to seeing the designs in August.”

The five teams will begin now and work through the spring and summer on design concepts, which will be put on public exhibition on Aug. 17, 2010. Details will be provided closer to that date.

The eight member jury – which counts a Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, a professor in the humanities, a former deputy director of the National Park Service, a real estate economist, a museum curator, renowned architects and renowned landscape architects among its members – presented its decision to competition managers after meeting with the nine teams that competed in Stage II of the competition.

The final jury pick will be announced Sept. 24, 2010. The project will be constructed by Oct. 28, 2015, the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch.

The public is invited to meet the design teams on April 28 at the Roberts Orpheum Theater downtown. Joe Buck will moderate a discussion about how their past work will influence their efforts to win this competition.

The “Meet the Design Teams” event will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Preregistration is helpful and available through the competition Web site,www.cityarchrivercompetition.org.

St. Louis native Joe Buck is the top play-by-play man for Major League Baseball and the National Football League on FOX Sports.

“I am looking forward to moderating a forum that promises to be informational, educational and exciting for the future of our community,” Buck said.

Buck will be joined in hosting “Meet the Design Teams” by Stastny, the competition manager.

The Roberts Orpheum Theater is located at 416 North 9th Street in downtown St. Louis. Public parking is available across the street.

Also while in St. Louis, the teams will explore the competition area, be briefed on project issues and the values of the national park, and get to know the region and its people.

To help the teams understand, from a personal standpoint, what the Arch stands for and the values it represents to our region and our nation’s history, members of the public are invited to share their thoughts, stories, photos and video. Competition organizers will post selections to the Web site and include them in a presentation to the competitors. This will help the teams in their effort to meet the design goals. Submissions can be posted to the Community Connections page of the Web site or to the City Arch River facebook and Twitter accounts.

Continuing education credits, HSW, will be awarded by the American Institute of Architects St. Louis for the April 28 event.
