This study for the treatment of the future subway extension to North Beach takes into consideration the historic value of the neighborhood and existing park, and attempts to create an improved pedestrian experience while minimizing the impact on the community. The proposed plaza replaces a small, inaccessible landscaped area and a short section of Powell Street, creating a unified pedestrian plaza containing the primary subway entrance, public seating, a public lawn, and outdoor dining areas for the existing restaurants. Views down Powell Street to the bay are maintained.

The subway stop’s golden entry canopy and surrounding common areas merge into the ground plane of Hollywood Boulevard, serving as a pedestrian threshold and grand “front door” for the elegant W Hollywood Hotel and residences—which rise up just behind—and a gracious arrival point for Metro Red Line riders.

Dubai Metro launches today

After four years of construction, Dubai will finally have its own Metro. The Metro Red Line will be opened tonight at Galleria of the Mall station by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The general public will be able to start using the Metro tomorrow morning from 5:30am.

The Metro is hoped to cut traffic congestion on Dubai’s roads and increase public transport usage from 10 to 30 per cent.
