OMA has been commissioned to design a masterplan for a major new urban development south of Bordeaux (FR), based on the expansion of the local tram system. The project, led by OMA associate Clément Blanchet and commissioned by La Fabrique Métropolitaine de la Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux, aims to regenerate the neighborhoods of Bègles and Villenave d’Ornon, forging new connections to Bordeaux’s central station. Villeneuve d’Ascq is a new town located near Lille in the very north of France. The Beam will be icon of a larger urban generation effort in the town centre which is currently characterised by parking lots, large volumes and undefined green spaces. On an urban level the masterplan aims at a more sustainable form of development by densifying the town centre and adding identity and diversity to the site. The 240 hectare Tokachi Millennium Forest is the brainchild of the entrepreneur Mitsushige Hayashi, who acquired the land with a view to offsetting the carbon footprint of his national newspaper business, Tokachi Mainichi. The masterplan, which I contributed to with the local Japanese landscape designer Fumiaki Takano, is marketed as having a sustainable vision of a thousand years, and this big thinking aims to not only to make the newspaper business carbon neutral, but also to preserve and prevent the further loss of natural habitats on the island to development. Hayashi believes that, in order for this vision to be viable, education is key. Helping it’s users to take ownership of the park is the best way to ensure it’s future. The concept masterplan for Al Maryah Island (formerly Sowwah Island) recently renamed by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, in recognition of its economic and historical importance and geographic location, has been approved.The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has approved the plan, which covers over 3.5 million sqm of mixed-use development across commercial, residential, retail, hospitality and community uses, and will become the center of Abu Dhabi’s New Central Business District (CBD).
