October saw Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with Thomas Phifer & Partners win Waller Creek Design Competition. We published Maxthreads design for Kaohsiung Taiwan – Infiltrated Cultural and Ecological Urbanism along with the realised design for Leicester Square City Quarter in London by Burns + Nice. June also saw Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and West 8′s Jubilee Gardens open in London. It is the twelfth commission in the Gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind. The design team responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium, which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games has come together again in London in 2012 for the Serpentine’s acclaimed annual commission, presented as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. BDP’s public realm scheme for Carlos Place and Mount Street in Mayfair, London was completed back in July. The project for Grosvenor is one of a number of schemes that seek to enhance the public realm of its central London estate. BDP has upgraded the streetscape in terms of composition, surfacing materials and furniture elements. The grandeur of this area has been revived through improvements to the pedestrian experience, the removal of clutter and the putting in place of high quality surfacing materials, by strengthening the street’s relationship to its buildings and by making Carlos Place and Mount Street Gardens better places for people. |
