Creative companies and TV channels moving to MediaCityUK will be inspired by its fresh new public spaces and waterside landscape, designed by Gillespies. MediaCityUK has been developed by The Peel Group and creates a globally significant digital media hub. It is one of the UK’s largest construction projects and has regenerated a former industrial dock site.
Paralleling the development of the buildings has been the construction of high quality external spaces designed to integrate the new architecture and create a fresh and creative public realm, with heart and human scale. The external spaces enhance the appeal and function of each building individually, and ground them collectively into a holistic visual language.

The Atlanta BeltLine is an infrastructure framework around which the urban core of Atlanta will grow by as many as 100,000 people. This loop of old railroads is being transformed into a 22-mile transit greenway that combines light-rail transit, parks and multi-use trails to generate economic growth and protect quality-of-life in 45 historic neighborhoods surrounding the central city. The BeltLine Corridor Design will establish typologies for all landscape architecture elements, wayfinding and signage, infrastructure and development interface. With a phased implementation plan, some components are being implemented even as design work is ongoing.

FoRM Associates won second prize in the international open competition for best urban landscape design of the central area of Kiev within the framework of preparation for UEFA Football Championship Euro-2012 and for the future. The competition was promoted by the Kiev City State Administration to draw attention of professionals and general public to the poor state of urban landscape in the central part of the city. Igor Marko and Petra Havelska presented FoRM’s proposal to the international jury and general public during the CANactions Architecture Festival in the House of Architects in Kiev.

In 2004 following devastating fires in January 2003 and inspired by Griffins’ vision for the National Capital, the ACT Government developed a proposal for an International Arboretum to be established on a 250 hectare site six kilometres from the centre of Canberra, at the western side of Lake Burley Griffin. In 2004 the ACT Government held an international design competition and Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL) / Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s (TZG) entry, 100 Forests / 100 Gardens was selected as a result of a two stage selection process.

Australia is a large country with many diverse landscapes ranging from dry forests through deserts to tropical rainforests. The landscape architecture profession in Australia is just as diverse as the landscape.
Julian Raxworthy and SueAnne Ware have recently edited ‘Sunburnt’, a discourse about the different ways of approaching contemporary landscape design in Australia. Thankfully, they have side-stepped the temptation to produce a coffee table book and have created a book that reflects on each project, thus giving the reader a true understanding of the landscape design, its influences and surroundings.
