SWA Group, has won an international design competition for a 2.3-kilometer-long new “central park” along the Pudong waterfront, Shanghai’s financial center and gateway to this global city. The transformation of this prominent waterfront site into “Front City” – a signature mixed-use development – provides new open space amenities to a diverse group of users and a visual centerpiece for visitors. Construction is planned to begin in Spring 2013.

The University of Manitoba in partnership with Manitoba Hydro has launched an international design competition seeking visionary design proposals for its 279-hectare (690-acre) Fort Garry Campus in Winnipeg, Canada. The campus includes the Southwood Lands, a 49-hectare (120-acre) former golf course that will become a new “sustainable” neighbourhood within the university boundaries.

Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with Thomas Phifer & Partners has won the international design competition to design Waller Creek, a thin, urban riparian ecosystem that meanders for through Austin, Texas from the northern part of the City southward through The University of Texas at Austin campus and along the eastern edge of the downtown area before it meets Lady Bird Lake. The MVVA Team, led by Michael Van Valkenburgh and Thomas Phifer, brings together professionals aiming to, “create an exciting and humane landscape that will be critical to great city life in Austin.”

Future Christchurch has launched Breathe, an International Design Competition to design a new urban village in Central City Christchurch. Designers from throughout the world are invited to influence the way the new generation of Central City residents will live within their environment and what type of communities they will want to be part of. Christchurch’s new urban village will offer medium density housing with easy access to green space, the new performing arts precinct, retail and entertainment areas, and transport and recreation facilities.
