Elli Nikolaidou’s thesis develops a redesign of the Customs Office area in Kavala, with a principal goal to reconnect with the city. The regeneration of the space will allow its conversion to an important part of the life and the motion of the city center. Thanks to the creation of a network of pathways and spots of interest for pedestrians, the development of the natural element and the reuse of buildings, the area will be active all day long.
How does one build on the stark beauty of a Cycladic landscape without destroying it? This project seeks an answer to that very question.
Placing such a rich development programme on this highly sensitive site necessitates a careful examination of the natural and historic elements which characterise the landscape: the amphitheatrical circle of hills, the seasonal streams, the juniper trees and frigana vegetation, the pezoules (agricultural terraces) and the xerolithies (dry stone walls). In the project “e_co_llectiva” the public space of the streets and the vacant lots in the internal parts of the four building blocks is unified so as to create a single urban garden-park which promotes the concept of collective activity. This intervention is given the title ‘e_co_llectiva’ after ecology (eco), collectivity (collectiva) and new technologies (e).
