Stadswater-Rotterdam-OKRA-Canal-Edge

For a long time the historic canals in the urban landscape of Rotterdam were forgotten. Today water plays the prominent role, that once it had within the city and can be discovered by visitors once again. The transformation of Stadwater is in fact a reversion of the relationship between the city and its urban canals. Since medieval times the urban water was not orientated towards the water, resulting in back-sides of the buildings along the water and anonymous public realm along the water, such as parking spaces and delivery roads. Public Spaces of Gy-L’evêque | Burgundy France | Atelier Jours

Gy-L’evêque
In this village of Burgundy crossed by a main heavy trafficked road, the sidewalks were the unique public space. Moreover this main road separated the village in two parts. The aim of the project was to break the ascendancy of this main road. Every city, even a village, should have a common public space to inhabitants and outer people.

By studying the territory and geography of the village, enabled us to understand the logic of the urban settlement. In order to represent the founding element of the village, the design uses the ‘ru de Vallan’ river as the focus point of the new public open space. A new riverbed has been created so that the new course of the river crosses the created plaza in its middle.
