Moore Square, a four acre square, is one of five original squares established by William Christmas’ 1792 plan for the capitol of North Carolina, self-described as the “City of Oaks”. Deeply loved by the citizens of Raleigh and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Moore Square is a civic treasure that has fallen into disrepair and is in need of improvements to accommodate the new thriving urban life of downtown Raleigh. This article sparked debate this week as Moss came out and stated that “The High Line has become a tourist-clogged catwalk and a catalyst for some of the most rapid gentrification in the city’s history.” Causing a few interesting conversations on the interwebs.
With the 2012 Olympic summer games over in London the flag has been passed onto Rio de Janeiro for 2016 Olympics. AECOM won the International Competition for the Urban Master Plan of the Rio 2016 Olympic Park las August. Once again cities are incorporating planning for a ‘Games Mode’ and a ‘Legacy Mode’ where the area is slowly transformed over the proceeding years into new uses. Previous Olympic Parks have had varying rates of success transformed areas of cities including Sydney and Beijing(although there are still issues surrounding the main stadium), whereas Athens has fallen into disrepair and been hard hit by the financial crisis.
Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg (PSF) design was recommended for Lansdowne Park after a winning the design competition held back in 2010 beating out Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, SWA, West 8 and Williams, Asselin, Ackaoui & Associates. Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg have continued on with the design process over the last two years have been working as part of the team of other design professionals and City of Ottawa to integrate the new park design with other elements of the project. The ‘new Lansdowne’ project includes – a large new park(Lansdowne Park), a re-designed stadium and Civic Centre, and a village of boutique shops and stores, services and residences – into a single plan.
