The City-County Building Plaza (CCB) in Indianapolis is an underused area of land in the up-and-coming Market East District in Indianapolis. Anchored by the Indianapolis City Market, and spurred in part by a planned transportation hub, this downtown district is becoming one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city.

Defined by its undulating topographic mounds, expansive plains, natural bluffs and the meandering Missouri River, Omaha’s original settlement patterns responded to this picturesque landscape and gave way to the native translation of “city of mound dwellers.” When abstracted within the boundaries of a 7,000 square foot public plaza these four landscapes – mound, plain, river and bluff – unite to create an innovative public space indicative of its greater region, and one which provides numerous benefits for the new Bluebarn Theater, the residents of Little Italy/Near South Side and the greater community of Omaha.

Creating a memorable space on a small budget is no easy task. The McJ Rooftop Deck team developed several unconventional approaches to the project’s design and execution. The finished space is sustainable, functional, context specific, and striking from any perspective. With a visionary client, collaborative design/construction team, and a little bit of luck the new rooftop space has exceeded the expectations of all parties involved and truly supports the “Keep Austin Weird” mantra.

Milton Street Park is a proposed 1.2-acre linear urban park alongside the Ballona Creek Bike Trail in Los Angeles, California. Currently the bike trail is a non-descript paved path directly adjacent to the creek, separated from the road by a metal fence, which inevitably deters pedestrians and natural wildlife from sharing the space with recreational bikers.
