Finalists announced for San Francisco Veteran Memorial

The finalists to design the San Francisco Veteran Memorial were announced yesterday at an event at Memorial Court. The memorial was planned in the 1920’s but was never installed in 1936 when the Memorial Court between the War Memorial Opera House and Veterans Building was completed.

Hundreds of artists from across the USA answered the call to design a memorial last summer. The list was narrowed down to three artist teams and according to the Daily Journal the finalists are:
  • Lee Norman is teaming up with Scott Slaney and Ricardo Supiciche of SWA Group.
  • Larry Kirkland and J. Douglass Macy. Kirkland who have collaborated in the past.
  • Susan Narduli with landscape architect Andrea Cochran

The three design team finalists will submit their proposal to the Veterans Memorial Committee in spring of 2011 with the final artist to be announced in May 2011. With the formal dedication in November 2013.

Finalists reveal designs for Gateway Arch Competition

The finalists recently submitted designs for the St.Louis Gateway Arch Competition (The City+The Arch+The River 2015 Competition) . St.Louis Gateway Arch Competition teams meet with local advisory team

Recently the five finalists for the St.Louis CityRiverArch 2015 design competition met with the 24 members of the  local advisory team to ask questions and seek clarification.  The advisory team includes officials from the city street department, the Missouri and Illinois transportation agencies, the Coast Guard, the Metro East Park and Recreation District and the St. Louis Archdiocese, owners of the Old Cathedral on the Arch grounds. The advisory team will also work with National Park Service and the winning team in implementing the design.

Finalists include

• Behnisch Team led by Behnisch Architekten – Stuttgart, Germany, Los Angeles
• MVVA Team led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates – New York City
• PWP Landscape Architecture, Foster + Partners, Civitas – Berkeley, Calif.
• SOM, Hargreaves, BIG – Chicago
• Weiss/Manfredi, Architecture/Site Design/Urbanism – New York

NYC launches urbancanvas Design Competition

A design competition to improve construction sites across New York City.  The competition is seeking artists and design professionals to  develop creative artwork for construction fences, sidewalk sheds, supported scaffolds and cocoons in New York City.

This competition, created by the Department of Buildings and Department of Cultural Affairs and supported by The Rockefeller Foundation, is a unique opportunity for artists and designers across the United States to contribute to New York City’s urban landscape.

Registration Deadline is 5:00pm EST July 19, 2010

Submission Deadlines is 3:30pm EST on July 28, 2010

NOTE: Design competition is limited to residents of the United States of America.

Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg design recommended for Lansdowne Park

Design B - Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg

The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg, a Vancouver based firm has been recommended by the jury. The Design was displayed as Design B by the City of Ottawa to the jury who deliberated on the design over the weekend. The City has not officially announced the winning proposal however I expected something to be announced soon.
