Registration opens today to find new design ideas for London’s Royal Docks. The Landscape Institute and Ecobuild, with support from the Mayor of London and London Borough of Newham, have launched ‘The Royal Docks Ideas Competition’ to find innovative design proposals that would transform the Royal Docks into a multi-functional, ‘liveable’ space. Comprised of three docks in East London – Royal Albert Dock, Royal Victoria Dock and King George V Dock – the Royal Docks is the largest enclosed docks in the world with a water area of nearly 90 hectares. The judging panel want entrants to incorporate green infrastructure and water sensitive design ideas into their proposals in an effort to make the area more resilient against environmental, social and economic challenges and to transform it into a world class location.

THE SOUTHWOOD FAIRWAY IN WINTER, A RENDERING FROM THE WINNING PROPOSAL “ARPENT”
In December of 2012, 45 teams from 17 countries set forth to re-imagine our landscape, and today(Nov. 4) the University of Manitoba announces that a team of Canadian firms has won its Visionary (re)Generation Open International Design Competition. What has been selected are not the final plans for the site’s development. Rather, this winning concept will guide development as the university continues to work with its stakeholders and the winning team.
The winners are Janet Rosenberg & Studio Inc., Toronto and Cibinel Architects Ltd., Winnipeg, with Landmark Planning & Design Inc., Winnipeg, and ARUP Canada Inc., Toronto. Their proposal — “Arpent”, a unit of measurement — will guide the development of a rare and beautiful parcel of land on the Fort Garry campus.

Recently 5 teams were shortlisted for stage 2 of the “Russia” Park design competition by members of the Jury and the Expert Council, as well as representatives of “Russia” Theme Park. The experts presented their conclusions on the results of evaluation of application documents.
All the experts unanimously agreed on 5 applications out of the 18 and the participants of the Stage 2 of the International Contest are:
The participants of the second stage of the International Contest for the concept and financial model of “Russia” Park and will start developing the contest proposals untill the closing date of the Contest in December 2013.

Earlier this year it is announced at the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens that the OKRA team of OKRA in collaboration with Mixst urbanism and Wageningen University, had won the prestigious competition ReThink Athens, towards a new city centre. The team is supported by the Greek Architects of Studio 75 and Werner Sobek Green Technologies. The event took place in presence of the President of the Onassis Foundation, Mr. Anthony Papadimitriou, the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Antonis Samaras, the Mayor of Athens, Mr. Georgios Kaminis, and many high officials.

Brussels’ premiere commercial street, Rue Neuve, is in urgent need of a facelift. The City of Brussels thus conceived of a redevelopment process with two objectives. Firstly a masterplan to develop strategic projects to give a mixed identity to the entire district with an emphasis on diversifying the trade program, increasing mixed functions such as residential space finally to connect with surrounding functions.

The Maeder-York Family Fellowship recognizes an emerging designer whose work articulates the potential for landscape as a medium of design in the public realm. The residential Fellowship is awarded through a juried international portfolio competition and builds upon the Gardner’s Artist-in Residence programs that have fostered creativity and collaboration in the arts for over two decades.
In 2014, The Maeder-York Family Fellow in Landscape Studies will be in residence in one of the Renzo Piano-designed apartments at the Museum for three months during the summer. A public event centering on a discussion of their work is scheduled for the evening of June 12, 2014.

The landscape architectural design competition for the IGA Berlin 2017 has been won by geskes.hack Landschaftsarchitekten and VIC Brücken und Ingenieurbau designing one of the largest open space projects in Berlin. The landscape design is for a unique new park landscape is to be built over an area of more than 100 hectares. Beginning with the Gardens of the World, the park landscape will reach out to Kienberg hill and parts of the expansive Wuhletal valley. The purpose of this competition, which IGA Berlin 2017 GmbH staged on behalf of the federal state of Berlin, was to find ideas that could translate the framework concept of IGA into an attractive spatial setting.
