Beech is a character tree for the Swedish southernmost province Scania. The beech also has a few specifics which makes it differ from other trees. The canopy owns a horizontal structure, and together with the equally horizontal position of the single leave this renders an architectural quality to the tree. The smooth, light grey bark makes the trunk resemble a leg of an elephant. The competition entry for the new plaza at Hyllie district in Malmoe was sent in by motto Fagus, which is the scientific name for beech. The idea was to establish a beech forest on the plaza, contributing with a regional identity to a site that lacked most landscape features.

El-Menia Design Competition | exp and lemay | Constantine Algeria


After a global competition, exp and lemay, won an international competition launched by the Agence de gestion et de régulation foncière urbaine de la Wilaya de Constantine in Algeria. This competition aimed at the realisation of a major project in the city of Constantine, Algeria, of approximately $ 2.4 billion ($ 2.4B), including $1.57 billion ($1.57B) devoted to the residential sector.

HUD launches Rebuild by Design competition to promote resilience for Sandy-affected regions

U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently launched REBUILD BY DESIGN, a multi-stage regional design competition. The goal of the competition is to attract world-class talent, promote innovation and develop projects that will actually be built. Once the best ideas are identified, HUD will incentivize their implementation using funds made available through the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program as well as other public and private funds. Examples of design solutions are expected to range in scope and scale – from large-scale green infrastructure to small-scale residential resiliency retrofits.

Six Finalists selected for Zaryadye Park Design Competition


Last week we told you that 87 of the 90 submissions were eligible for entry into Zaryadye Park Design Competition. Yesterday, the jury held an eight-hour long meeting the Jury and selected six teams out of 90 applications. The main criteria was composition of a consortium, consisting of representatives of various specialties, and consortium portfolio. On 27 September 2013 the six participants will provide landscape and architectural concepts for Zaryadye park. After the technical expertise these projects will be presented to the Jury early November 2013. And later on the Winner will be involved in implementation of the project.

The six finalists include teams lead by:

Canterbury Cathedral is England’s first Cathedral and Mother Church; it welcomes over a million visitors a year. The Canterbury Cathedral Landscape Design Competition is an exciting initiative, which seeks to find the best design team to re-imagine and reinvigorate the existing setting. It is a rare opportunity to bring fresh thinking and new ideas to the landscape of one of England’s most famous buildings.
