The urban forest is an important part of every thriving city. Tree canopies provide critical services for the city, including reducing heat island effects though the provision of shade and the creation of microclimates.

We have selected three projects from each month that we published in 2012. First off is January with studio a+i winning design for the AIDS Memorial, Michael Maltzan with Tom Leader Studio winning submission for St. Petersburg Pier and Warrior Square Gardens by Gillespies. 
Future Christchurch has launched Breathe, an International Design Competition to design a new urban village in Central City Christchurch. Designers from throughout the world are invited to influence the way the new generation of Central City residents will live within their environment and what type of communities they will want to be part of. Christchurch’s new urban village will offer medium density housing with easy access to green space, the new performing arts precinct, retail and entertainment areas, and transport and recreation facilities. The City of Dreams Pavilion will be a gathering place for people to meet, learn about the arts programs on the island, be able to enjoy a performance or lecture, and experience the interaction of art and the historic context of Governors Island. Our theme for the pavilion, the City of Dreams, points toward the future. If we imagine a future New York City where anything is possible, what would it look like? In our wildest and most optimistic dreams, what is the future of the city?

The Monument Circle Ideas Competition was conducted to generate bold thought and creativity in how we, as a community, maximize the future use of the Circle. The Competition attracted 64 entries from Indianapolis and around the world and advanced hundreds of conversations and ideas to make tomorrow’s Circle an even more active, engaging and inviting destination year-round.
