CONSTRUCTION of the worlds longest cross-sea bridge linking Chinas southern economic hub of Guangdong Province to Hong Kong and Macau began yesterday, a project expected to strengthen economic ties.Starting from Lantau Island off the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Y-shaped Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge will have a total length of almost 50 kilometers(31 miles), of which about 35km(21 miles) will be built over the sea, making it the longest of its kind, according to Zhu Yongling, an official in charge of the projects construction.
The bridge is going to cost 73 billion yuan ($10.3billion USD)

Temple University reports
Students in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture’s Senior Design Studio have circled an important date on their calendar in December — and it’s not the one you might be thinking.
On Thursday, Dec. 10, the 27 students will present their design concepts for Cape May, New Jersey’s Rotary Park, Harborview Park and a new biking and walking trail linking all of the historical shore point’s unique features.

UNStudio has been awarded 1st prize in the recent competition for the masterplan of the Beijing River Creative Zone, located in Yanqing, 200km from Beijing. From the nine projects presented (Foster+Partners (UK), Zaha Hadid (UK), Atelier d’Architecture Christian de Portzamparc (FR), AS. Architecture-Studio (FR), Beijing Tsinghua Urban Planning &Design Institute (CN), Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (CN), NPS (US) and KCAP (NL)), UNStudio’s design was selected as the winning entry.
The Beijing Creative Zone represents the urban typology needed for a new open learning environment in ‘Urbanity in Nature’. The design for the Creative Zone encompasses compression on a dual scale; the greenbelt and the urban fabric. The urban fabric of the edge is formed by the interweaving of two distinct yet highly interconnected strips. In the creation of an Architectural Park, ateliers and pavilions are organised on the basis of the Chinese garden’s emphasis of “一步一景” (“One View Per Step”).. The parkland becomes an international showcase of experimental projects and emerging design practices. By implementing the four clusters of a products life cycle ‘Think, Develop, Produce and Sell’ as a continuous loop of activity, one creates a platform for all steps of the process towards product sales.

A report was recently released by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics titled Global Construction 2020 which gives a global forecast for the construction industry until 2020.
Include in the report summary are some interesting insights into the coming decade of construction.
Currently the global construction market is worth 7.5 trillion dollars (at 2008 prices) and will grow by 69.3% to 12.7 trillion by 2020(at 2008 prices).
The report states that the US, UK, Canada & Australia will rebound quicker than other developed countries. However, developing countries such as India & China will have quicker growth in the next decade than developed countries and that the China construction market is forecasted to exceed the USA by 2018.
Output in India will be accelerate quicker than China and that emerging markets construction output will be exceed 3 times that of developing countries over the next decade.

AECOM Technology Corporation (NYSE: ACM), a leading provider of

key contracts worth US$60 million from the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region to provide infrastructure design and construction
supervision consulting services for the landmark Kai Tak redevelopment
The aim of the effort is to transform the old Kai Tak Airport site into
a vibrant community supported by a variety of commercial, social and
recreational facilities. AECOM’s work will encompass urban design;
landscape, road, drainage and sewerage works; sewage pumping stations;
water supply systems; and dredging and treatment of contaminated

“This exciting project provides an excellent example of how AECOM is

Construction is scheduled to be implemented in phases during 2011. The
project’s public park is expected to be completed during 2012, while the
overall effort is scheduled to be completed during 2018.
Beijing City government has placed seven alternative design for the Beijing CBD public display. Beginning yesterday they were opened for public comment as apart of a six-day CBD International Business Festival. A plan will be selected by the end of this year for planning and implementation.
The masterplans were submitted by the SOM, KFP, ADPi, China Academy of Urban Planning & Design, along with three design firms.
The plans calls for a 3 square kilometre expansion of the CBD which doubles the size of the current Beijing CBD. The city government has requested that all new buildings in the new area have a low carbon footprint.
The expansion includes the area from East Third Ring Road near Guomao to the Fourth Ring Road near Sihui Bridge, and will be completed in the next six to eight years. The existing CBD took ten years to complete.
