A recently completed building with 4 additional floors; the requirement was to replace an unsightly mesh-façade and improve on a bland and uninviting disused space behind it. Located within the prime Singapore Central Business District (CBD), the 1984 building is 10 storeys tall and was originally designed to be environmentally responsive with floors receding inwards with each lower floor. The concept masterplan for Al Maryah Island (formerly Sowwah Island) recently renamed by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, in recognition of its economic and historical importance and geographic location, has been approved.The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) has approved the plan, which covers over 3.5 million sqm of mixed-use development across commercial, residential, retail, hospitality and community uses, and will become the center of Abu Dhabi’s New Central Business District (CBD).
Wuxi Taihu New City is an approximately 500-hectare master plan that reconnects the city with its waterfront and creates dense, walkable neighborhoods oriented around a central park. The master plan, by SOM in collaboration with Tom Leader Studio, involves an extensive open space network to improve quality of life in a rapidly urbanizing region. Taihu Basin, the region surrounding Wuxi, is home to over 50 million people and is one of the most developed regions of China. The Wuxi Taihu New City master plan represents a new model for compact urban development in China that enhances the existing landscape and creates value through parks and a new public waterfront.
Innovation Square is an urban redevelopment project that will transform twelve underutilized blocks in Midtown Gainesville into a mixed-use urban research neighborhood that advances the national and global profile of the city’s largest employer—the University of Florida with its medical center, Shands Hospital at UF —and the growing local biotech industry. The Visioning process for the District has set in place lasting partnerships between public and private stakeholders to ensure successful implementation.
As the next step in a planning process begun in the mid 1970’s, the vision presented here is a proposal for the revitalization of the Northeast Riverfront District, the City of Wausau’s former industrial land along the Wisconsin River. Prior to this, the City had substantially developed its plan for the central downtown and completed its purchase of most of the long dormant Northeast Riverfront District. At the next stage, the City hired a team of graduate student architects and planners with UW-Milwaukee’s Community Design Solutions (CDS) to adopt relevant recommendations from previous plans, integrate input from the community, and apply their skills and knowledge of modern design principles to create an urban landscape vision that stimulates further public input, planning, and decision-making. City officials and City Planner Brad Lenz had decided to bring an outside student group in for this project to provide fresh eyes for the task of creatively revitalizing a landscape that for so long had symbolized Wausau’s industrial decline.
