Visionary (re)Generation | Design Competition

The University of Manitoba in partnership with Manitoba Hydro has launched an international design competition seeking visionary design proposals for its 279-hectare (690-acre) Fort Garry Campus in Winnipeg, Canada. The campus includes the Southwood Lands, a 49-hectare (120-acre) former golf course that will become a new “sustainable” neighbourhood within the university boundaries.

The Canadian Firefighters Memorial officially opened on September 9, in Ottawa, Canada. Located at the site of the capital’s devastating fire of 1900, this urban-planning memorial ensemble was collaboratively designed by PLANT Architect Inc. and Canadian visual artist and novelist Douglas Coupland. The team won the national competition hosted by the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) and the National Capital Commission (NCC) in 2010. The striking red Peace Bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava opened to the public with a community celebration on Saturday 24 March. The bridge design was unveiled in 2009 to varied opinions and created controvesy for its color, design and cost. Now that has faded into the background as the bridge has become a reality and opened to the public with many celebrating by crossing the bridge for the first time.
