Wausau North East Riverfront Masterplan

As the next step in a planning process begun in the mid 1970’s, the vision presented here is a proposal for the revitalization of the Northeast Riverfront District, the City of Wausau’s former industrial land along the Wisconsin River. Prior to this, the City had substantially developed its plan for the central downtown and completed its purchase of most of the long dormant Northeast Riverfront District. At the next stage, the City hired a team of graduate student architects and planners with UW-Milwaukee’s Community Design Solutions (CDS) to adopt relevant recommendations from previous plans, integrate input from the community, and apply their skills and knowledge of modern design principles to create an urban landscape vision that stimulates further public input, planning, and decision-making. City officials and City Planner Brad Lenz had decided to bring an outside student group in for this project to provide fresh eyes for the task of creatively revitalizing a landscape that for so long had symbolized Wausau’s industrial decline.

The Frederick Law Olmsted Design Competition in Riverside Illinois

The historic Village of Riverside Illinois invites qualified landscape architects, landscape designers, architects and artists to explore designs that embody the values of Fredrick Law Olmsted. We seek to create an attractive and eye-catching main entrance to the Village and its Central Business District. The entrance should include signage and landscaping appropriate for Olmsted’s most significant landscaped community in America.

Designed in 1868 by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Father of Landscape Architecture, the Village of Riverside was one of the first planned communities in the nation. Riverside is a National Historic Landmark with worldwide recognition of its signature landscape. With its expansive green parkways, curvilinear streets, and landscape that harmonizes with nature, Riverside‘s planning ideals have been emulated in cities and towns around the world.

A new guide Valuing natural resources

World Business Council for Sustainable Development has recently published a guide to help businesses how to value ecosystems and natural resources.  The Guide to Corporate Ecosystem Valuation (CEV), an innovative framework designed to enhance business understanding of the benefits and value of ecosystem services like fresh water, food, fiber and natural hazard protection.

This first-of-its-kind framework enables companies to consider the actual benefits and value of the ecosystem services they depend upon and impact, giving them new information and insights to include in business planning and financial analysis. This will support improved business decision-making by creating more alignment between the financial, ecological and societal objectives of companies.
