The Stage 2 section of the Highline designed by James Corner Field Operations with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Piet Oudolf, and Buro Happold has opened to the public. The opening of the new section doubles the length of the public park. After years of planning, design and construction, the High Line is now one mile long, running from Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street, connecting the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen.

Starr Whitehouse unveils Brooklyn-Queens Expressway options

Recently Starr Whitehouse unveiled three concepts for a section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) – a trenched Interstate (I-278)in New York. The concepts where presented to the community, elected City and Congress officials and representatives from DOT and DPR. Starr Whitehouse developed the designs in consultation with the community through workshops and were seen as ‘…an achievable vision for enhancing the pedestrian and cyclist environment above the BQE, adding green components and improving the physical connection and sociability among adjacent neighborhoods’.

Santa Monica Palisades Garden Walk + Town Square

The design for Palisades Garden Walk + Town Square has been shaped by an intense and collaborative community process and inspired by the California Arroyo Landscape.   The resultant design scheme, the “Arroyo Wash,” presents a park that will be the new heart of the city.  Fluid braided pathways appear to organically emerge from the entrance of City Hall extending outward and connecting neighborhoods with the Pier, the beach, and civic campus.  Linear rolling topography reinforces the softness of the circulatory system and creates a series of “bluffs” that host overlooks and framed views of the city.   Carved into the rolling topography are a series of “bays” that organize the site’s program and include space for small events and performances, an outdoor café, gardens, play spaces, and bike kiosks.

Water elements within the park also originate in Town Square and, through a series of runnels, extend into the serpentine, flowing topography of Palisades Garden Walk with increasing turbulence that ultimately softens the sound of traffic along the Ocean Avenue, on the site’s westernmost edge.  An overhead lighting trellis also creates strong linkage between Town Square and Palisades Garden Walk and will be a feature element at the Corner of Ocean and Colorado Avenues.

Field Operations wins Qianhai Urban Design Competition

Field Operations Model

James Corner’s Field Operations has won the International Urban Design Competition for Qianhai area, within Nanshan District of Shenzhen, China. The design divides the 18.04 square kilometre(approx. 7 sq .miles) area into easily manageable districts with unique architectural typologies and functions. Field Operations won the competition due to intensive compact and diverse design that follows the principles of sustainability, and encircling the city’s most important one of the resources – water.  The design is envisioned as a “coastal water-town” that  focuses on eco-innovation whilst simultaneously creating a diverse waterfront urban environment which continues through the entire 18 square km area.

The area is to be the 2nd CBD/CAD in Shenzhen with Futian District being the 1st.  Qianhai will play an important role in development of the Pearl River Delta. The  new CBD will located along Metro Line 1 & 5 and the new high speed and inter-city railway lines and expressway links between Hong Kong, Shenzhen & Guangzhou. Also within Qianhai where 3.7 square kilometres will be developed by joint-venture between Shenzhen and Hong Kong governments as a  Service Park similar to the Suzhou-Singapore Development in Suzhou.  The new city is envisioned to be the next Sydney , Hong Kong and Vancouver.
