The first completed project of the urban renewal project ‘Aarschot on tracks’ is Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge by West 8. From now on, it serves not only as a ‘landmark’, but it also breaks the barrier effect of the rail tracks. It connects the city with its old and new parts. This pedestrian bicycle bridge over the tracks is now an indispensable link in the city cycle route. It becomes an essential part of the supra-local functional cycle network.

An international team led by London based artist Peter Fink (Form Associates) and lighting designer Mark Major (Speirs + Major) in association with Buro Happold in Los Angeles has been announced as the winner of the largest interactive green energy lighting project in North America. The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, built in 1969 in the spectacular context of the bay, has become a symbol of the San Diego area – just as the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges are symbols for San Francisco. The San Diego Bridge is characterised by its graceful 2.5 mile long curved deck supported by over 30 towers reaching a height of 200 feet over the navigation channel. The shipping channels are spanned by the world’s longest continuous three-span box girder measuring 1,880 feet.

Sioux Falls this week removed a section of abandoned railway bridge so that a new pedestrian bridge can be constructed. Which would left me asking why wouldn’t you re-use the bridge as the pedestrian/cycle bridge? Apparently the old railway bridge acts as a dam during heavy rains causing flooding in the area. Its a shame to see the bridge torn down lets hope the salvaged steel ends up in the new pedestrian bridge.
The old railway bridge is set to be replaced by a $284,000 200 feet long and 12 feet wide bridge set to be finished by April. Landscape architecture firm Confluence are involved with the bridge design and landscape design.

Measures proposed for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge’s construction and operation have been deemed environmentally acceptable, the project’s chief engineer Aaron Bok says. Consultants completed the project’s environmental impact assessment for the Highways Department Mr Bok describes the planning process as highly complicated, but notes the bridge will offer significant social and economic benefits to Pearl River Delta cities.
Construction is moving along at the first Shell Bridge, West 8+ MRIO designed for the City of Madrid. 100 m3 of concrete was poured inbetween the two layers of the wooden mold, moving another step closer to the desired end result: a concrete dome.
