JMD Design were commissioned by Stockland to design document and provide construction quality advice for a feature park within a new subdivision project at Glenmore Ridge, Penrith. The eastern edge of the new park had been designed and built some ten years ago, hence the name Jacaranda Park. It was decided that the new park should break with the gardenesque image of the eastern half and create a new strong identity to the new suburb dropping away to the west.
ASPECT Studios with Choi Ropiha Fighera have been chosen by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to design and deliver Sydney’s Ultimo Pedestrian Network (UPN). The linear elevated public space will be a highly anticipated and activated city space with many of Sydney’s key cultural and educational institutions located along its edges. The UPN project will provide improved pedestrian and cyclist access and circulation from the Railway Square bus and train interchange into the south-west corner of Darling Harbour.
The institutions which have a direct investment into the project include the Powerhouse Museum, The ABC, TAFE – Sydney Institute, the City of Sydney Council, and Infrastructure NSW and UTS with its new Gehry designed school of business on the doorstep of the UPN. The concept scheme is scheduled for consultation in June 2012 and the project set for completion at the end of 2013.
ASPECT Studios has completed a multi-use trail at Narrabeen Lagoon on Sydney’s northern beaches. The lagoon is one of Sydney’s natural assets and is a major drawcard and focal point of the area. Diverse experiences are on offer at different locations around the lagoon. The eastern side comes to life especially at the weekends as people take to the water in kayaks and swimming, or strolling and pausing at cafes, restaurants and the bustling Sunday market. The western side of the circuit, which ASPECT Studios have designed, offers a tranquil bush experience. The new trail provides a multi-layered recreational facility and safe shared trail for pedestrians and cyclists to enhance the existing trail and facilitate the area. The design work undertaken by ASPECT Studios on stage one of the revitalisation of Jack Evans Boat Harbour is now complete and the new recreational and aquatic playground is open to the public. The upgrade to the Jack Evans Boat Harbour enriches the existing park experience to become a unique civic place of waterfront leisure. The design strongly promotes physical activity by providing a range of public domain elements such as extensive walkways and cycle-ways.
Integration of the public realm with large scale buildings and facilities is the key to ASPECT Studios design for the new Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and the adjacent South Wharf mixed use precinct.
ASPECT Studios design allows continuous and seemingly uninterrupted access through the site and amongst the buildings. This was no small task for a precinct that contains a convention centre, hotel, retail, residential, public forecourts, promenades, laneways, heritage landscapes and the now refurbished Exhibition Centre Park.
The public realm is the external connective space and tissue of the precinct. It is about ‘places’ and ‘paths’, providing an engaging, directional and textured environment, to complete the missing link in the natural progression along the Yarra River from Southgate through Freshwater Place, Crown Casino and on to the Yarra’s Edge residential precinct.
