One year after Hurricane Sandy took its toll on New York, Swedish architectural practice White Arkitekter, along with partners Arup and Gensler, were announced winners of an international two-phased design competition to redevelop the waterfront of Rockaway, Queens, which was particularly hard-hit by the effects of the superstorm.

World Expo 2017 | Astana Kazakhstan | HOK

In the early summer of 2013, HOK was invited to participate in a design competition for the 2017 Expo Design in Astana – the rapidly developing capital of Kazakhstan.   The theme for the expo; “Future Energy”, challenged entrants to demonstrate the use of innovative technologies capable of affecting people’s perception of energy and green development.

Garden Bridge public consultation opens

Back in June we published the Garden Bridge project by Thomas Heatherwick Studio in collaboration with Dan Pearson Studio and ARUP. Recently, the public consultation process was initiated with new images and an online survey allowing for public to give feedback on the designs and plans in these early stages to assist the newly established Garden Bridge Trust in developing their plans.

The Garden Bridge Trust is a new charity, established to promote and seek funding to build and maintain a new footbridge spanning the Thames linking South Bank to Temple.

Landscape Institute to launch WSUD film at Generation H20 Conference


On Friday 26 July, the Landscape Institute will launch their Water Sensitive Urban Design film at Generation H20 student conference at the Garden Museum in London. The film, commissioned by the Landscape Institute and based on work by CIRIA, Arup and AECOM, explains the concept of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and argues the case for designing ‘with’ water when planning any new development.

‘Garden Bridge’ by Thomas Heatherwick unveiled


Thomas Heatherwick, Designer of the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron has revealed his design for a vegetated bridge across the Thames River in London. Heatherwick  said that “The idea is simple; to connect north and south London with a garden. We have been working with actor and campaigner Joanna Lumley, who has been a proponent of such an idea for several years.”
