The Clark Art Institute is in its final phase of a transformational campus expansion program that adds new facilities to support the growth of museum and academic programs, enhances the visitor experience, improves circulation throughout the campus, and creates new levels of sustainability across its 140 acres. The program focuses on providing superior facilities for the benefit of visitors and scholars and underscores the Clark’s environmental stewardship of its grounds.

Rebuild by Design was a design competition to create innovative community- and policy-based solutions to protect U.S. cities that are most vulnerable to increasingly intense weather events and future uncertainties. Back in April, 10 Finalists were unveiled and the teams developed their proposals in partnership with local stakeholder coalitions and feedback from participants. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan announced recently that six design proposals have been selected as winners of HUD’s Rebuild by Design competition.

Last week we published the design concept for the The Immersery which has now opened to the public as the centrepiece of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. The Immersery is a cloud-like structure suspended above a floating bar and open-kitchen restaurant on the banks of Melbourne’s Yarra River designed by international design practice HASSELL, from a concept dreamt up by the team at Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. WLA interviewed HASSELL by email about the design and various aspects of the design process.

The Broad, Los Angeles’s newest contemporary art museum, recently unveiled designs for a new outdoor public plaza by architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Hood Design, landscaping that will feature 100-year-old olive trees as well as enhanced landscaping and improvements along Grand Avenue, adding another parcel of critical green space to the region and making downtown’s cultural corridor more pedestrian-friendly when the plaza opens later this year. In addition to the plaza next to the museum, The Broad also announced that its adjacent restaurant will be developed by leading Los Angeles restaurateur Bill Chait, with a unique vision to integrate dining with art and community.

The setting for this project is a 110 hectare sub-division of a wine farm in the Cape Winelands between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, consisting of existing vineyards and some indigenous natural areas largely infested with alien invader species.
Small wine farms are generally commercially unsustainable and to this end the client, a pharmaceuticals entrepreneur, wishing to enhance the value of his investment and diversify the land use, has developed a flagship stud farm, training facility, vineyards and olives orchards on land which he recognized as having potential due to its location and natural setting.
