*UPDATE* The location has been changed from the Marine Etablissement site to an artificial island in the IJ waterfront. Participants are asked to design a new island for the MH17 Memorial in the Amsterdam “Internal Sea” – IJmeer, situated between the Java-eiland and Amsterdam-Noord, the rapidly developing part of the city. The size and configuration of the new artificial island is up to the participants and can be up to 8Ha within the borders of the highlighted area in the DWG drawing (please see the Download Section). The site can be accessed by popular water transport (ferry/taxi) via nearby stations. The site is only 1800m away from the Amsterdam Central ferry station and is located right next to the Oostveer Ferry Station route. This week construction works have started at the Noorderpark in Amsterdam. The first part to be developed is Volewijk-Oost and will be ready mid-2009. When all parts are completed, Amsterdam will have a real green central park that functions as a central meeting point, with spaces that can be used for large gatherings and functions.
The design by West 8 for the new park will transform the urban landscape that was created by construction works on the new local railway line, the North-South line. In addition to tying together three existing parks that were isolated from each other, West 8’s design also proposes a broad circuit track that links the existing disjointed parks, with new bridge connections which span across the canal and over the road and railway line.
