The site between the Czaar Peterstraat and the Funenpark was the location of a former croquettes factory. Until recently the warehouse was used as a workspace and studio for a media company. Due to the transformation of the entire neighbourhood it became possible to develop.

In the 1950s, 60s and 70s almost all Amsterdam city parks, including Oosterpark, have had playful additions designed by the famous Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck. Employed by the Municipality of Amsterdam, Van Eyck designed more than 700 public play zones between 1947 and 1978. They illustrate his vision on the use of a city, in which play zones become a present architectonically interesting urban element, that brings together young and old. Especially Van Eyck’s paddling pools function as true magnets for children during summertime, and his climbing igloos have become an intrinsic part of the youth of Amsterdam city kids generations.

The Oosterpark, built in 1891, is part of the Amsterdam 19th century extension girdle, and is the first large public park that was realised by the municipality. Landscape architect Leonard Springer designed a classic English landscape style city park with monumental trees, meandering lines and a large water pond. Traditionally, the Oosterpark has been flanked by public functions like the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, university buildings and the Tropenmuseum – monumental buildings that are located in the northern zone but which ‘turn their back’ towards the park.

Oostenburgereiland – a history of shipyards and slipways
The inner city Wiener location on Amsterdam’s island Oostenburg will be transformed into a housing location. In an open planning process with surrounding inhabitants, potential new inhabitants, the municipality and Heijmans Woningbouw a plan has been made to realize 70 dwellings in the area. The architectural office Arons & Gelauff is responsible for the urban plan and the architecture, the outdoor space and the tree containers have been designed by HOSPER.

*UPDATE* The location has been changed from the Marine Etablissement site to an artificial island in the IJ waterfront. Participants are asked to design a new island for the MH17 Memorial in the Amsterdam “Internal Sea” – IJmeer, situated between the Java-eiland and Amsterdam-Noord, the rapidly developing part of the city. The size and configuration of the new artificial island is up to the participants and can be up to 8Ha within the borders of the highlighted area in the DWG drawing (please see the Download Section). The site can be accessed by popular water transport (ferry/taxi) via nearby stations. The site is only 1800m away from the Amsterdam Central ferry station and is located right next to the Oostveer Ferry Station route. matterbetter is inviting architects, young professionals and students to participate in open-ideas international competition for MH17 Memorial + Park in Amsterdam, that is organized in consultation with Municipality of Amsterdam.
An international open ideas competition for architects and students is initiated to remember and honor the victims of the MH17 tragedy. This man-made tragedy has influenced thousands of lives in direct or indirect manner across the entire world. Most of all this tragedy has affected the Netherlands – the Dutch nation that lost 193 souls in this catastophe. Therefore Amsterdam, the departure point of this one way flight, was selected as a location for the MH17 Memorial.

Artist Impression Purifying park ‘de Ceuvel’ (DELVA Landscape Architects in collaboration with space&matter)
DELVA Landscape Architects and the Association Ceuvel present the Purifying the Ceuvel Park. On the 21st of june, a new creative hotspot in Amsterdam Noord officially opens. The last few months, tenants, volunteers and students, worked hard on the boats, the jetty, the Ceuvel Café and the park.
