Today, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Director Caroline Baumann announced the winners of the 2016 National Design Awards, recognizing excellence and innovation across a variety of disciplines in 11 categories. Now in its 17th year, the annual awards were established to promote design as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world.
Hargreaves Associates has been awarded the Annual National Design Award for Landscape Architecture. Other recipients include Moshe Safdie for Lifetime Achievement; Make It Right for Director’s Award; Bruce Mau for Design Mind; Center for Urban Pedagogy for Corporate & Institutional Achievement; Marlon Blackwell Architects for Architecture Design; Geoff McFetridge for Communication Design; Opening Ceremony for Fashion Design; Tellart for Interaction Design; Studio O+A for Interior Design; and Ammunition for Product Design.

The City of Kansas City is sponsoring a design competition to bring in new ideas, energy, and visions to the development of Twin Creeks, a 15,000 acre predominantly rural area in the Northland of Kansas City that is projected to house up to 75,000 people over the next 20+ years.
Professional designs will be selected through a competitive process. Three winning concepts will be selected and awarded prizes totaling $24,000. Student teams are also encouraged to apply and will be considered for the overall awards and for a student-only Honorary Mention.

The winning proposal from Harvard University – “The Midtown Beat”
A team representing Harvard University has taken top honors in the 2016 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Hines Student Competition with its winning master plan proposal to transform a Midtown Atlanta site in a thriving, sustainable, mixed-use, walkable, and transit-accessible neighborhood. The Harvard team ousted another team from Harvard University, one from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and one from the University of Miami.
