LSU & Harvard top America’s Best Schools Survey

It’s that time of year when Design Intelligence publishes it’s design school rankings survey. The  2011 America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools survey ranks  undergraduate and graduate programs from the perspective of leading practitioners in the professions of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and Industrial Design. America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools by Design Intelligence is conducted on behalf of the Design Futures Council.  This 12th annual survey was conducted in mid-2010.

The Top 5 Design Schools for Landscape Architecture:

Undergraduate
1. Louisiana State University
2. Texas A&M University
3=. Purdue University
3=. University of Georgia
3=. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ.

Graduate
1. Harvard University
2. Louisiana State University
3. Texas A&M University
4=. Cornell University
4=. University of Pennsylvania
4=. University of Virginia
4=. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ.

Summary
For undergraduate programs Texas A&M University was the biggest mover this year up from 7th in 2010 to 2nd in 2011. As for graduate study once again Texas A&M University has moved  up the rankings from 8th in 2010 to 2nd in 2011. Also Cornell University went from 9th to equal 4th. Harvard has once again topped the graduate rankings for 2011; a ranking it has held since 2005.

Landscape Professionals were also surveyed on university programs based upon graduate skills which ranks Communication, Design, Computer Applications and Sustainable Design Principles & Practices. Also included in the  survey are the  results from a Deans Survey and the Pass Rates of LARE by Section.

Calls for 2011 Landscape Conference Papers & Award Nominations

Recently there have been calls for papers for 2011 events and awards below is a summary.

Call for Nominations for 2011 IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award
This award is the highest honour that the International Federation of Landscape Architects can bestow upon a landscape architect. The Award recognises a living landscape architect whose lifetime achievements and contributions have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment and on the promotion of the profession of landscape architecture. The award is bestowed annually on an academic, public or private practitioner whose work and achievements are respected internationally.
Winners include Peter Walker and Prof. Bernard Lassus.
Nominations should be submitted by 10 November 2010.

Calls for Papers for IFLA 2011 World Congress
Scales of  Nature – Zurich, Switzerland 27-29 June 2011
A call for paper abstracts has been issued for papers that address the congress theme and topics. More information can be found at IFLA 2011 Registration for the Congress has also opened with limited number of attendees – they currently have an early bird offer of 488 Swiss Francs (CHF) ($485USD) – you can register at IFLA 2011.

Call for Papers for AILA 2011 National Conference
Transform – Brisbane Australia  11-13 August 2011
Australian Institute of Landscape Architects National Conference which is held every two years is being held in Brisbane in August 2011 with the conference theme of Tranform and is currently calling for papers that relate to the conference theme and session topics. IFLA 2011 – Scales of Nature – Zurich, Switzerland

West 8+MRIO Planting 8000 trees & participating in Xian IHE 2011

West 8+MRIO plant 8000 pine trees in Madrid
West 8+MRIO recently started with the planting of 8,000 pine trees for the Salon the Pinos in Madrid, Spain. As part of the master plan West 8+MRIO designed for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area above the M30 motorway, the Salon de Pinos will act as a spiral cord, connecting the various park areas included in the design.

Xian International Horticultural Exhibition

West 8 have also announced that they will be participating in the Xian International Horticultural Exhibition from April 9 to October 9, 2011.

The theme of Xi’an International Horticultural Exhibition 2011 is “Harmonious Coexistence Of City And Nature “. The Exhibition will create a plant-dominated natural landscape, highlighting the history, culture and local characteristics of Xi’an, displaying the harmonious coexistence of city and nature, andexploring the future development of harmonious coexistence among human, city, landscape and nature.
