The International Horticultural Expo in Xian, China opened on 28th April. The Garden of 10,000 bridges by West 8 is complete along with many other display gardens.

Gardens are telling stories; they are poetry and have a narrative. Our garden represents the human life, the path of people’s lifetime. This path is a path of uncertainty and burden. Many bridges over troubled water. The garden design takes this path of life as a meandering, winding road – continuous and like a labyrinth. The path through nature takes you over 10000 bridges.

For the 2011 Xi’an International Horticulture Exhibition, West 8 designed a Master Landscape Architect Garden, that plays with the limits and the sensation of surprise.

The International Horticulture Exhibition 2011 has many gardens designed by world renowned landscape architects such as TerragramMartha SchwartzSLATopotek1, Catherine Mosbach, Plasma StudioGROSS.MAXEMBT Miralles/Tagliabue, and Atelier DYJG. Also a 9000 square metre garden has been designed by various landscape architecture programs from across the world that were exhibited in July this year at the Creative Nature Exhibition in Qingpu, Shanghai.  With many other gardens designed by city and provinces along with some enterprise gardens. The 2011 Xi’an International Horticulture Exhibition will be held from 28 April to 8 October 2011.

MRDC | Ken Smith Workshop: city of the river

Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition - Ken Smith Workshop
“There’s a reason the city is located on the falls. The falls are really powerful. They’re beautiful and they really have a strong emotional response for people. I mean: you’re just drawn to them. They are what make a place. And that is why the native Americans were there; that’s why the settlers ended up there; that’s why people move from the sticks, from the little farms into the city; that’s why people move from the suburbs to downtown; that’s why people from other cities move to Minneapolis. People inherently want to be near the water. The water is the meaning of life, it’s the source, it’s the thing.”
Ken Smith, Principal, Ken Smith Landscape Architect

Minneapolis Riverfront Design Competition - STOSS Landscape Urbanism

STREAMLINES is about the sheer unfiltered experience of direct contact with the river and river life, in many ways, atmultiple moments. And it’s about weaving these experiencesback into the everyday city. STREAMLINES is also a project about working ecologies, ecological systems and dynamics putto work to clean, to re-constitute this working riverfront, andto guide a longer-term transformation of the city fabric.

Landscape Architects – Welcome to 2011 – its time to lead the discussion

Welcome to 2011. All landscape architects this year need to start leading the discussions. We have lagged for too long on the sidelines being creative and idealistic watching other professions take the lead on numerous areas of design – sustainable design, urban design, water, low-carbon cities, eco-cities, food security, green architecture (vertical & horizontal) and many others. You name it if its your passion its time to start leading the discussion offline and offline whether its conferences, websites, newspapers, blogs, facebook, or twitter. Stop waiting for governments and your professional organisations to do start the conversation; they don’t have the time or people to talk about the issues we deal with on a daily basis and the solutions needed.

Landscape Architects have the skills, experience and ideas to push landscape architecture and design to new frontiers and into public awareness. So please start a blog, email newsletter, facebook group, twitter account. Don’t have time for this? well you can start by commenting on other blogs or facebook groups, or email a collegue in another design field telling them what you’ve been doing. Most importantly get involved and start the discussion about the ideas and solutions you’ve been creating in your school, office, firm, studio. The world’s waiting to hear from you.

With just under 150 days to go before the opening of 2011 International Horticultural Exhibition to be held in Xian, China (西安, 陕西) construction is in full swing on the gardens including West 8’s Garden of 10.000 Bridges (pictured above).
