We have published some great projects from around the world during from small scale projects to large scale urban design and its that time of year to review some of the great projects from 2011. We start with projects from January through to March.  Wining Entry - Earth Central by AECOM The winner of Street 11 Competition, to redesign the main street of Lilydale was announced today with the winning entry being awarded to Earth Central by AECOM. The Street 11 Competition was organised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. The competition challenged entrants to redesign the main street of Lilydale to create an attractive and environmentally sustainable, pedestrian oriented town centre. A total of thirteen submissions were received and all submissions addressed the Assessment Criteria. The jury received digital files five days prior to the closed judging session at the University of Melbourne. This process involved short listing the entries into the top five submissions for further review and discussion. After vigorous debate regarding the entries the two finalists were selected. The jury would like to thank and congratulate all entrants for their contribution to the future of both Lilydale, and the profession of Landscape Architecture. The 2nd World Youth Olympics Games will be held in Nanjing China in the year of 2014. It will attract the world’s best young athletes to compete against each other representing the future and life of the world’s competitive spirit. Located in the outer suburbs of Nanjing city in the district of Hexing, the new Olympic site will act as a catalyst for a new commercial center that will activate not only the district, but also the Yangtze Riverfront which the city of Nanjing has turned its back on throughout its history. The site attempts to integrate new offices, commercial malls and shops, with future generations of residences and the Olympic Village that are all connected by the central Olympic Corridor that runs and bridges over the future dyke and highway; bridging the city to the water.
Australia is a large country with many diverse landscapes ranging from dry forests through deserts to tropical rainforests. The landscape architecture profession in Australia is just as diverse as the landscape. Julian Raxworthy and SueAnne Ware have recently edited ‘Sunburnt’, a discourse about the different ways of approaching contemporary landscape design in Australia. Thankfully, they have side-stepped the temptation to produce a coffee table book and have created a book that reflects on each project, thus giving the reader a true understanding of the landscape design, its influences and surroundings.
