NZILA – Shift Conference

The 2008 NZILA SHIFT Conference will highlight and discuss these emerging modes of design practice in the context of the fluid and unpredictable nature of urban change.

A diverse range of speakers will consider legal and planning implications, contemporary design initiatives, changing technologies and the challenges of serving the needs and interests of society as a whole.

Contemporary Chinese at Center for Architecture

On the heels of the Chinese New Year, the Center for Architecture marks the Year of the Rat with two new exhibitions devoted to contemporary Chinese architecture. “Building China: Five Projects, Five Stories” and “Co-Evolution” will bow together tomorrow, February 26 at the center, located at 536 LaGuardia Place in New York. An opening party will be held from 6pm-8pm.

“Building China: Five Projects, Five Stories,” running through May 31, highlights five recently completed projects from emerging Chinese artists. The goal of the exhibition is to use each work’s complexities to illustrate the modern realities of architecture in the rapidly-developing nation. Projects include the Dafen Art Museum in Shenzhen and the Cultural Revolution Timepiece Museum in Sichuan, both completed last year.

World-renowned architecture mind Qingyun Ma to participate on IDA jury

Qingyun Ma, dean of the University of Southern California School of Architecture and former principal of the Shanghai-based architecture and land planning firm MADA s.p.a.m., has accepted his appointment to serve as a juror on the prestigious International Design Awards architecture panel.

HCMC new urban area announces design contest

Thu Thiem New Urban Area’s management has announced that an international contest to design infrastructure for this Ho Chi Minh City suburb will be launched next Monday.

Organized by the city People’s Committee, the competition solicits designs for the area’s central square, a riverside park, and a bridge for walkers.

From preliminary entries, the judges will select six outstanding designs and provide US$20,000 to each designer.

The final winners are expected to be announced in August.

The top entry will get a cash award of $50,000 and the right to negotiate a contract to execute the project.

The next two designs will get $30,000 and $15,000.

The US-owned Sasaki Associates Company is acting as consultant for the contest.

The 657-hectare township in the Thu Thiem Peninsula in District 2 was approved last year at a cost of $10 billion.

Upon completion in 2025, it will have residential areas, financial and commercial centers, an international exhibition and convention complex, and other facilities.
