HASSELL dreams up centrepiece for Melbourne Food and Wine Festival

Later this week the 2014 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival opens to the public with a centrepiece designed by HASSELL. The cloud-like structure suspended above a floating bar and open-kitchen restaurant on the banks of Melbourne’s Yarra River. HASSELL designed The Immersery: Festival Kitchen, Bar and Raingarden from a concept dreamt up by the team at MFWF, and more than double the size of last year’s Festival hub. HASSELL designer Brenton Beggs said The Immersery brings the Festival’s water theme alive and offers a glimpse of the long term potential of the Southbank site.

ENYA Announces the Winners of QueensWay Connection: Elevating the Public Realm Design Ideas Competition

FIRST PRIZE | The Queensway Steps | Carrie Wilbert of Paris, France

The Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) committee of the AIA New York Chapter is pleased to announce the winners of its 2014 biennial design ideas competition, QueensWay Connection: Elevating the Public Realm. Entrants were challenged to design a vertical gateway for the elevated viaduct portion of a 3.5 mile stretch of abandoned railway in Central Queens, currently under study for conversion into an urban greenway by The Trust for Public Land, Friends of the Queensway, and their design consultants. Of the 120 submitted proposals from 28 countries, the jury selected the winners to represent the diverse array of ideas generated.

reSITE2014_EN-1 reSITE conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic on June 19-20. reSITE is heading into its third year and quickly becoming one of the premier architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture events. reSITE 2014 will include presentations, panels and debates with over 50 leading experts from Europe, Asia and North America, while hundreds of conference delegates from dozens of countries will enrich the dialogue and experience of answering questions and forming new ones.

reSITE conference takes aim at the question of modernizing and improving the metropolis. The conference will focus on providing solutions for the conflicted desires of Central European citizens; to grow and yet weave in a complex past. The themes that parallel reSITE – architecture, politics, finance, planning and democracy – they all meet when one thinks of public space. A major goal of the conference is to catalyze you – the public, design and business community – to influence positive changes in cities while we encourage municipal leaders to answer the design challenges of our generation. The Temporary Placemaking installation at the University of Technology Sydney is an example of the ‘lighter, quicker, cheaper’ ethos which provided a green outlook, seating opportunities and a place to gather for students during a 7 week period whilst the new Campus Alumni Green is under construction. Designed to be assembled in a short time period and tight budget, the installation items will also be reused and adapted for other locations.
