The EFLA regional congress named ‘Green infrastructure, from global to local’ took place between Saint Petersburg (Russia) and Stockholm (Sweden), Uppsala (Sweden) and Helsinki (Finland) between the 11 and 15th of June after the General EFLA Assembly. From the beginning the organizers’ aim was clear : introducing a long-term infrastructure vision, building cooperation with numerous events, presenting interesting contributions and strengthening the EFLA network.

As part of Beijing Design Week the “Hutopolis: city visions” is an exhibition that collects one year of research, experiments and events organized in Asia and Europe by the Hutopolis research program with the goal of creating feasible solutions for urban planning in China.
Soft and physical strategies, visions and ideas have been developed taking Beijing as case study Conceived as a collaborative network featuring a series of proposals from different backgrounds, the exhibition showcases strategies based on four sites in both historical and modern areas of the city.

The familiar purview of design as it relates to the built environment is the making of space in a material and experiential sense. This shaping of physical urban form is the accumulated product of a range of disciplinary capacities and expertise – architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, engineering, fine arts and communication design among many others. Professional capacity, in this context, is most often deployed in response to the explicit demands or implicit desires of a client or program, characterizing design primarily as a responsive, service-based method.

Immensity + Intimacy: Brooklyn Bridge Park explores the reborn landscape on New York City’s East River as a prototype for reimagining the urban waterfront. Through an inventive series of strategies, including sculpting the site’s complex maritime edge, reusing salvaged materials, and embedding ecology and experience, the park, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, redefines the Brooklyn waterfront as a central place in the civic imagination.

On Sunday, 23 September the NYC Parks & Recreation will open the 2,200-acre Fresh Kills Landfill for the third year to give a free sneak peek to the transformation into NYC’s biggest and most fascinating new park, on Staten Island’s west shore.
Put the event in your diary/smartphone for your sunday in the outdoors. Arrangements have been made for free shuttle buses from Staten Island Ferry so there is little stopping New Yorkers getting out to Fresh Kills for a Sneak Peak.

Three international teams (51N4E, Studio 012, KCAP) have developed visions for how Brussels will look in 2040. The visions are now being shown in the Brussels 2040: Three Visions for a Metropolis exhibition at the Centre for fine Arts in Brussels. The three teams have produced videos, photos, models, urban master plans to present their visions which hope to provide answers for What will Brussels be like in 2040 if its demographic growth continues? How will people get around the city if the motor car is no longer a sustainable means of transport? How can we reduce the social divide and avoid a dual city? How can we offer everyone an opportunity to live and work in the city with dignity? How can we coordinate the development of Brussels with its hinterland?
