The landscape architectural design competition for the IGA Berlin 2017 has been won by geskes.hack Landschaftsarchitekten and VIC Brücken und Ingenieurbau designing one of the largest open space projects in Berlin. The landscape design is for a unique new park landscape is to be built over an area of more than 100 hectares. Beginning with the Gardens of the World, the park landscape will reach out to Kienberg hill and parts of the expansive Wuhletal valley. The purpose of this competition, which IGA Berlin 2017 GmbH staged on behalf of the federal state of Berlin, was to find ideas that could translate the framework concept of IGA into an attractive spatial setting.
On August 1st the successful Vertical Village exhibition will open in Hamburg Museum as part of the IBA Hamburg programme. The show, by MVRDV, the Why Factory and three artists/architects from Taiwan, was previously on display in Taipei and Seoul and now makes a first stop in Europe having been totally redesigned for Hamburg: a port city closely tied to Asia, and an ideal environment to discuss alternative modes of urban development to the relentless ‘Block Attack’. The show is open to the public between August 2nd and September 29th and features a walk through the Vertical Village urban regeneration proposals, films, software, and a giant, interactive Vertical Village sculpture made of more than 80 pieces of urban furniture. August 2nd, an international symposium on Taipei will take place.

Composite Landscapes examines one of landscape architecture’s most recognizable representational forms, the montage view. The exhibition gathers work from a select group of influential contemporary artists and a dozen of the world’s leading landscape architects. Contributors include Adriaan Geuze, Michael Van Valkenburgh, Richard Weller, James Corner, Claude Cormier and many others.
These composite views reveal practices of photomontage depicting the conceptual, experiential, and temporal dimensions of landscape. The first exhibition of its kind in North America, Composite Landscapes illustrates the analog origins of a method now rendered ubiquitous through digital means. In revisiting the composite landscape view as a cultural form, Composite Landscapes illuminates the contemporary status of the photographically constructed image for the design disciplines, and beyond.
