SHIFTboston is calling on architects, space-architects, scientists, engineers, urban designers, landscape designers, artists and futurists to submit their most provocative ideas for the moon. Think: WHAT IF this could happen on the moon? SHIFTboston seeks to collect visions that will provoke thought on the moon as a new destination. We want radical ideas for new lunar elements such as rovers, growing pods, inflatable structures, and lunar habitats. How about a new moon culture? Envision: FUN on the moon- activities, moon fashion, and spacesuits! YOU TELL US. Competitors are encouraged to form teams in order to tackle multiple concepts.
The honorary recipient will receive a cash prize and present at the Moon Capital Forum at the Cyclorama in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, October 21, 2010. The Forum will be a panoramic gala event, attendees will include members of the Moon Capital Competition jury and advisory panel, astronauts, aerospace and astrophysics engineers; government, community, industry and academic leaders along with design professionals. AECOM has launched for its second year, an open student ideas competition for 2010 – Urban SOS.
The competition seeks to engage students in the design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, engineering, environmental and related fields, with the urban conditions that are now facing the majority of the world’s population.
This year, AECOM are exploring the topic of ‘Transformations,’ looking at seven cities in particular that are in the midst of a change or collection of changes that represent both challenges and opportunities to the shared futures of each city. Entrants must submit a site redevelopment plan that addresses specific issues in one of the following seven cities:
- Beijing, China
- Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
- Johannesburg, South Africa
- Istanbul, Turkey
- Phoenix, USA
- Port au Prince, Haïti
- São Paulo, Brazil
The top four finalist/teams will travel to Barcelona to attend the World Architecture Festival from 3-5 November, 2010, with $20,000 in prize money at stake.

Santa & Cole, the Spanish Association of Landscape Architects and the European Biennial of Landscape Architecture announce the first Santa & Cole Landscape Architecture Competition, a Europe-wide competition of ideas intended to promote and reward good professional landscape architecture work in Spain, as a new culture which modifies and enriches the surroundings. Held biennially within the framework of the European Biennial of Landscape Architecture, each competition will consider a different sphere of action.
This first competition will reward the landscape architecture intervention in the Valle de Sant Pere, within the Belloch property, situated in the municipality of La Roca del Vallés, Barcelona.
The design team must be headed by a landscape architect who is eligible to work in Spain. To be eligible to work in Spain those who are in possession of the corresponding qualification, either Spanish or legally recognizable (qualifications of the
European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland) or recognized as equivalent to the Spanish one and/or recognized by the corresponding professional association.

The international design competition for the reinvigoration of the area surrounding the world renowned landmark the Gateway Arch has move on to the third and final design phase with Five Teams selected. When you look at the first list of nine teams announced back in February 2010 for the second stage it was the Who’s who of design but now that list is down to five teams; its the cream of the crop and the winner of the next stage will be a hard decision for all those involved and I guess we all have to wait until late September to find out the winner.
The leaders of the design teams entering the third and final stage of the competition are:

“The goal of the first two steps of the process was to identify design teams with the talent, capacity and commitment to create thoughtful design solutions addressing the complex issues of the site and its relationship to the city, the river and the Illinois side. With this selection, that goal has been accomplished,” said Competition Manager Donald J. Stastny, of StastnyBrun Architects. “The selected teams represent local, national and international perspective, and we look forward to working with them over the next few months as their visions evolve and they create their designs.”
“Having this level of architectural, engineering and landscape design power focused on such a visible urban park is exciting,” said Tom Bradley, superintendent of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. “We are committed to incorporating our parks into the life of their surrounding communities. I look forward to seeing the designs in August.”
The five teams will begin now and work through the spring and summer on design concepts, which will be put on public exhibition on Aug. 17, 2010. Details will be provided closer to that date.
The eight member jury – which counts a Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, a professor in the humanities, a former deputy director of the National Park Service, a real estate economist, a museum curator, renowned architects and renowned landscape architects among its members – presented its decision to competition managers after meeting with the nine teams that competed in Stage II of the competition.
The final jury pick will be announced Sept. 24, 2010. The project will be constructed by Oct. 28, 2015, the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Arch.
The public is invited to meet the design teams on April 28 at the Roberts Orpheum Theater downtown. Joe Buck will moderate a discussion about how their past work will influence their efforts to win this competition.
The “Meet the Design Teams” event will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Preregistration is helpful and available through the competition Web site,www.cityarchrivercompetition.org.
St. Louis native Joe Buck is the top play-by-play man for Major League Baseball and the National Football League on FOX Sports.
“I am looking forward to moderating a forum that promises to be informational, educational and exciting for the future of our community,” Buck said.
Buck will be joined in hosting “Meet the Design Teams” by Stastny, the competition manager.
The Roberts Orpheum Theater is located at 416 North 9th Street in downtown St. Louis. Public parking is available across the street.
Also while in St. Louis, the teams will explore the competition area, be briefed on project issues and the values of the national park, and get to know the region and its people.
To help the teams understand, from a personal standpoint, what the Arch stands for and the values it represents to our region and our nation’s history, members of the public are invited to share their thoughts, stories, photos and video. Competition organizers will post selections to the Web site and include them in a presentation to the competitors. This will help the teams in their effort to meet the design goals. Submissions can be posted to the Community Connections page of the Web site or to the City Arch River facebook and Twitter accounts.
Continuing education credits, HSW, will be awarded by the American Institute of Architects St. Louis for the April 28 event.

Six internationally renowned teams have been short-listed to design a new bus station which will welcome visitors to a rejuvenated Stoke-on-Trent city centre. The teams have been selected following a major competition organised by the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership.
More than 40 architectural practices expressed interest in designing the new bus station, which will unlock Realis Estates’ £250 million redevelopment of Stoke on Trent’s East West Centre creating a regional retail and leisure destination for the city.
The six short listed design teams are:
• Austin Smith Lord, the practice behind the proposed new €100 million Tara Street Station in Dublin, lead architect with sub consultants Curtins, Hilson Moran & JMP
• BDP, which was responsible for the new Number 1 court at Wimbledon, lead architect with sub consultants Mott MacDonald & AA Projects
• Grimshaw, the architects behind the Eden Project in Cornwall, lead architect with sub consultant Arup
• John McAslan & Partners, which is working on the masterplan for the redevelopment of Marble Arch in London, lead architect with sub consultants Mott Macdonald, AECOM & Billing Jackson
• Wilkinson Eyre, which designed the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead, lead architect with sub consultants Arup, Drivers Jonas & Buchanan
• Zaha Hadid, the practice working on the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics, lead architect with sub consultants AKT, Savell Bird & Axon, Max Fordham.
The competition to find a multi-disciplinary team, including architects, engineers and environmental experts, was launched in the Official Journal of the European Union in December 2009. The short-listed design teams now have 40 days to prepare more detailed submissions to include proposed layouts and external designs. Residents will be consulted about the designs and their views will form part of the selection process.
The aim is for construction is to start on site in 2011 with completion in 2012.

KCAP Architects & Planners have won the prestigious masterplanning competition for the development of a 70 hectare site at the Bay of Pasaia, San Sebastián, Spain. The site, currently used for harbor activity, will gradually become available for redevelopment. The project is considered as a key opportunity for the surrounding communities which are in need of regeneration and will have an important impact on the entire region.
The winning scheme was elaborated by KCAP in collaboration with sustainability advisors of ECOFYS and local consultants of LKS engineering and architect Ángel de la Hoz. It was chosen unanimously by the jury. The team will remain involved to elaborate and refine the winning masterplan concept. The final version of the masterplan will be delivered in October 2010. During the next weeks an exhibition will tour the local municipalities of the bay.

1st Prize & Overall prize for Guildford: Return of Ritual;Team: Renante Go-Soco Solivar
“TownShift: Suburb Into City” sponsored by the City of Surrey was a sustainable design competition to provide vision for Surrey’s five growing town centres – Cloverdale, Fleetwood, Guildford, Newton and Semiahmoo.
The competition attracted 138 submissions from 20 countries, and 27 finalists were selected by the five-member TownShift jury.
Renate Solivar of Vancouver took the overall top prize of $15,000 for his entry “Return of Ritual” which proposes structuring a new bold, brightly coloured construction along 152nd Street in front of Guildford Mall. In addition to the $15,000 first prize, his entry also won $10,000 for first prize in the Guildford category, for total winnings of $25,000.
All 27 have been on public display at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Surrey Central City for the past three weeks, and will remain on display until Feb 28th, the closing day of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
The next steps in taking new ideas and making them into reality will be explored at a special panel discussion entitled “Where Do We Go From Here?” at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s main Surrey Campus on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 7:00PM.
