Draw Up A Chair | Design Competition | The Battery Conservatory


The Battery Conservancy invites students and professionals from the Americas (Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean), to design an iconic moveable outdoor seating element. The winning design will be fabricated for use at The Battery, the 25-acre park at the tip of Manhattan which annually welcomes six million visitors.

Why a Moveable Chair?
As the great urban theorist William Holly Whyte discovered: “Chairs enlarge choice: to move into the sun, out of it, to make room for groups, move away from them. If you know you can move if you want to, you feel more comfortable staying put.” The Battery’s movable chairs will delight while they invite, animating the park and making it Downtown’s central meeting place.

The architecture of this new Structure should reflect contemporary design tendencies. The proposal must not only attend to the specific function but the design should also take into consideration the urban insertion and its impact.

Designing Action Nashville ideas competition

Designing Action is an IDEAS competition to re-imagine an industrial site along Downtown Nashville’s Cumberland River, with an emphasis on creating active spaces for healthy citizens, and highlighting alternative sports and related activities. The 75 acre site has many variables to entice creative solutions. It is a brownfield disconnected from the neighborhoods of East Nashville by an elevated interstate. Almost the entire site was under water in the 2010 May flood. The site is within walking distance of several major sports, entertainment, and convention venues.

ReSpace Competition 2012 – You Design It! We Build It!

The ReSpace Competition is an effort to raise awareness of reuse materials while showcasing creative and successful small space designs inspired by their use.  Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, the Raleigh Chapter of Architecture for Humanity, and the American Institute of Architects North Carolina Triangle Section are pleased to announce the ReSpace Competition. This design contest is an effort to raise awareness of reusable materials while showcasing creative and successful small space designs inspired by reuse. The ReSpace Competition asks designers to approach the process of designing a small, transportable space with an emphasis on the material “ingredients” that will shape it.
