Chris Reay, the CEO of Engineer Placements, says the industry is especially vulnerable because engineers are in demand around the world. He says that often when he tries to contact some of the engineers on his company’s database he finds they “are now in Perth, Dubai or China”.
Also, it is not only South Africa that is suffering from a skills deficit — the whole world is affected. When it comes to the lack of technical skills, South Africa is far from alone. In the case of engineers, for example, she says that Germany needs about 8 000.

DUBAI: The UAE has been ranked among the top 10 preferred destinations for workers, attracting quality workforce from all over the globe with its vibrant job market, a survey has revealed.
The survey ‘Relocating For Work’, conducted by Manpower Middle East said that with the region growing as a popular destination for workers, the UAE was rated sixth among the top 10 preferred destinations, a leading gulf daily reported.

New York City artist has built a replica of the soon-to-open Trump Dubai hotel tower out of thousands of Lego pieces.
Nathan Sawaya’s 10-foot version of the distinctive five-star hotel is expected to be unveiled Monday in Columbus Circle.

The green build wave is rising, and right now general contractors have the opportunity to ride its crest. It is fast becoming expected that professionals in the building trades are ready, willing and able to work green — and that means understanding the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
Contractor’s LEEDing Role
In the chain of events that leads up to LEED certification, general contractors have a special “watchdog” role. It is the general contractor’s responsibility to keep accurate records on all materials used that are required to meet LEED standards. Consequently, it is imperative that not only the general contractor but also sub-contractors understand LEED certification, its requirements and its growing importance in winning bids.
Once the SSI guidelines are published in spring 2009, general contractors, landscape architects, developers, builders, and maintenance crews who are prepared to take advantage of them stand to see interest in obtaining their services rising.

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has appointed Shohei Shigematsu as partner of the OMA Holding company. Mr. Shigematsu is currently director of OMA*AMO PC in New York.
Mr. Shigematsu is currently in charge of Cornell University’s new building for the College of Architecture, Art and Planning in Ithaca, NY, a Mixed-use High-rise Building in Jersey City, NJ, and a Residential Tower with CAA (Creative Artist Agency) screening room on 23 East 22nd Street in Manhattan amongst other projects.
