UAE feeling effects of the crisis

With more reports today of another major developer cutting jobs, and news in the past week of property prices falling and stock market share values tumbling it appears that the UAE is not immune to the financial crisis spreading across the globe.

Major property projects are still being announced and the government is using the huge fiscal reserves to stabilise the economy and push forward some of its major infrastructue projects. The sense is that the crisis will be short lived in the UAE and GCC countries but will have a moderate impact on the UAE.

Design firm offers three separate strategies to revitalize downtown San Bernardino – San Bernardino County Sun

San Bernardino County Sun reports that

“The city needs to put its best face forward, especially on the 215 Freeway frontage, if it wants to improve its image.

That’s the recommendation of Vaughan Davies, director of urban design for EDAW, a 60-year-old Los Angeles urban design firm with offices in 22 cities around the world.

Four months after being retained by San Bernardino’s Economic Development Agency, Davies introduced three different planning strategies for revitalizing the downtown to the public in a standing-room-only presentation in the old Woolworth Building on the corner of Fourth and E streets on Thursday.”

UNEP reports “Cities from Beijing to New Delhi are getting darker, glaciers in ranges like the Himalayas are melting faster and weather systems becoming more extreme, in part, due to the combined effects of man-made Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABCs) and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

These are among the conclusions of scientists studying a more than three km-thick layer of soot and other manmade particles that stretches from the Arabian Peninsula to China and the western Pacific Ocean.”
