The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) celebrates urban places that are distinguished by quality design and their social and economic contributions to our nation’s cities. Winners offer creative placemaking solutions that transcend the boundaries between architecture, urban design and planning and showcase innovative thinking about American cities. One Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 will be awarded. Projects must be a real place, not just a plan or a program, and be located in the 48 contiguous United States. Award winners may use prize money in any way that benefits the project.

Jaanila Country, a masterplan by KCAP Architects & Planners has been awarded with the Habitat award for the best residential public space design in the Leningrad region (St. Petersburg), Russia. The public space of Jaanila Country has been developed in cooperation with landscape architects Felixx. It was chosen as first prize winner out of a selection of 13 nominated projects. The regional Habitat contest is hosted by the Leningrad Union of Building Organisations and has been held for the first time. It aims to honor new developments for their contribution to the public environment.

Completed in 2013 the project represents the coming together of landscape architecture and community endeavour in a uniquely procured enterprise. +50 references the number of participants involved in the project.

*UPDATE* The location has been changed from the Marine Etablissement site to an artificial island in the IJ waterfront. Participants are asked to design a new island for the MH17 Memorial in the Amsterdam “Internal Sea” – IJmeer, situated between the Java-eiland and Amsterdam-Noord, the rapidly developing part of the city. The size and configuration of the new artificial island is up to the participants and can be up to 8Ha within the borders of the highlighted area in the DWG drawing (please see the Download Section). The site can be accessed by popular water transport (ferry/taxi) via nearby stations. The site is only 1800m away from the Amsterdam Central ferry station and is located right next to the Oostveer Ferry Station route. An international open ideas competition for architects and students is initiated to remember and honor the victims of the MH17 tragedy. This man-made tragedy has influenced thousands of lives in direct or indirect manner across the entire world. Most of all this tragedy has affected the Netherlands – the Dutch nation that lost 193 souls in this catastophe. Therefore Amsterdam, the departure point of this one way flight, was selected as a location for the MH17 Memorial.

Urban Land Institute (ULI) has awarded Klyde Warren Park the 2014 Open Space Award, acknowledging the two-year-old park in Dallas, Texas as an outstanding achievement in urban placemaking. ULI’s annual competition recognizes successful public spaces that have socially and economically enriched and revitalized their communities. Klyde Warren Park, designed by award-winning landscape firm, The Office of James Burnett (OJB), was selected from five finalists.
