Billie Holiday Park | The Hague Netherlands | Carve

The Billie Holiday park is situated in Loosduinen, a quiet suburb of The Hague. After a recent renovation of the park, this part seemed to be forgotten; it was an unused, neglected space. However, this changed when a residential-care complex was built. Suddenly, this part became a frontside, which created the possibility to transform this place into an attractive park zone, too. The community board organised a participation process, mapping the wishes of the local residents. Renovating the soccer field and guarding off the biking path were important starting points, just like improving the spatial structure of the park. By arranging all new functions in one binding element, the surrounding space is reorganised, too.

The Leopold Park renovation is a case whereby creative planning and design can deal with some aspects of climate change.  A range of actions and techniques are available for managing flood risks in parks: green roofs, sustainable drainage, flood pathways, temporary water storage, or upland-land management. Strategies for managing high temperatures in green spaces can be the use of open water and water features, cool pavement materials and shade. Water reservoirs help to ensure sufficient water supplies during dry summers, or low-water-use-planting can reduce water demand. Vegetation management, including careful choice and placement of trees and vegetative cover, in combination with re-grading or re-inforcing of slopes, to reduce risk of erosion and landslips.

Gardens of Diversity | Lausanne Switzerland | Zambrano+Añaños.

We understand the garden as a place where the diversity of Lausanne takes place. A flowerpot prototype where the varieties of plants planted according with the origin of Lausanne people grow up together. International Biodiversity for national belonging. A public space uprooted, integrated, aerial and symbolic, a common ground of our origins and our future in the city of Lausanne. A public place of respect where differences are reduced to a single location, on a unique land.
