Olympics will leave east London an open space to rival Hyde Park | UK news | The Guardian

After the athletes have gone and the flame has moved on, the biggest public park in more than a century will emerge from the site of the 2012 Olympics in London.

Its designers hope the 270-acre park (pdf), which will open in 2014, will capture the spirit of the great Victorian parks whose creators hoped to counteract the urban squalor of the industrial revolution.

Britain’s queen says global warming likely to hit hardest at most vulnerable nations – International Herald Tribune

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Monday called on the Commonwealth to help the most vulnerable nations deal with the impact of climate change.

The 53-nation Commonwealth of Britain and its former colonies includes some of the world’s wealthiest countries as well as some of the poorest.

“The impact of pollution falls unequally: it is often those who pollute the least — notably in the world’s least-developed nations — who are closest to the razor’s edge: most affected by the impact of climate change and least equipped to cope with it,” the monarch said in a Commonwealth Day message.

Urban Trees Survey

The largest ever survey of urban trees in England has been published.

The survey shows that although national tree health has improved markedly since the last survey in 1992, with trees being maintained much more regularly by councils, there has been a decline in the number of older trees in towns and cities and overall planting rates of new trees has fallen.

Trees play a key role in reducing the impacts of climate change in urban areas and are important to residents of towns and cities. The report found that most trees make a considerable or outstanding contribution to the quality of neighbourhoods.

New guidance published to increase and improve London’s open and green spaces

The Mayor of London has published two reports to support the delivery of London Plan policies that are designed to protect, improve and create open spaces throughout London.

The first – ‘Supplementary Planning Guidance for the East London Green Grid’ – sets out how the open spaces in the east of the city should be enhanced as the area is transformed by both the 2012 Games and major regeneration planned in the coming decade.
New guidance published to increase and improve Londons open and green spaces.

The Green Grid provides a guide for developers and planners on how to deliver the network of interlinked, high quality open spaces that will connect the town centres, public transport hubs, the Thames and the surrounding countryside with the newly created communities planned for east London. This new guidance will help those planners and developers plan where and how the Grid should develop for the future.

The second – ‘Improving Access to Nature’ outlines how boroughs should plan policies for more access to nature in their development plan documents as well as encouraging and facilitating projects that significantly improve biodiversity in parks and open spaces.
