Van Alen Institute has opened registrations for the L Train Shutdown Charrette. The Canarsie tunnel connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn on the L line will be closed completely for one and a half years or closed partially for three years to make repairs due to damage from Superstorm Sandy. Van Alen Institute is holding a charette propose implementable interventions that look beyond shuttle buses and private cars. Participants from both design and non-design fields are invited to this program that asks how unforeseen design solutions can facilitate easier routes during service shutdowns.
Have an idea? There is no entry fee to enter. Form an interdisciplinary team of at least two people and send us your 150-word concept by midnight EDT on June 9.

Because landscape architects look at problems at a macro scale and thought that a landscape architect teamed with an engineer, architect or other non-design discipline could create a disruptive solution. The construction of tramways represents an innovative solution to transport problems in big cities. This is the first tramway of Florence, winding west and connecting the Santa Maria Novella station to Scandicci, where open spaces have been improved by choosing trams for present mobility, proposing a greenway with highly developed technology such as the systems of flat hanging gardens which house the tram-line along the entire route, from the tree-lined avenues to the roundabouts.

Petržalka is a complex urban mechanism, which has gone through an unpredictable evolution. Its inhabitants form an active and responsible community, sensitive to any change. The city-wide redevelopment of infrastructure and introduction of a tram-train line running through the core of Petržalka presents an opportunity to integrate the existing green spaces into a defined natural urban park, expressing the informally developed character of Petržalka as a “green” quarter over the years.

The Arroyo Seco Confluence is a complicated site in which freeways, rail infrastructure and the rivers are tightly intertwined. What’s more, the Confluence is a very important site with immense potential. The objectives of this study are to re-transform the Arroyo Seco from a channelized and single-functional channel to a multi-functional corridor of significant natural and cultural value, to provide safe access and create activities and recreation for people within the maze of pre-existing infrastructure, to regenerate for developing to bring new life and investment to nearby urban settlements.

The West Toronto Railpath is a multi-use public trail and linear park located alongside an active rail line in a former industrial neighbourhood. The design successfully addresses two natures of the city – the wild, other-worldliness of the rail corridor and the regular bustle of residential life – and brings them together in a beautiful and active urban composition. What was an impassable brownfield is now a well-loved neighbourhood connector that has improved both the human and ecological urban habitat.

A 30-acre site of underutilized space located beneath a multi-level interchange in San Francisco, CA is envisioned as a highly productive sequestering urban forest that humanizes the street level making it accessible, safe, and enjoyable for the public. The design had three primary goals. 1) Combine time, process, and ecology to offset CO2 emissions from the freeway while creating a memorable place. 2) Reduce persistent flooding on this former marshland. 3) Reconnect 2 neighborhoods to each other and to the city’s largest Farmer’s Market.
